Ordered some items from boatfix.com in the US. They've come back asking for an image (scan, fax) of my credit card. Has anyone ordered anything from this site (or other US site) and had the same request - and if so were there any problems?

The only additional info they'll get is my signature so outwardly it seems like they're just being diligent over non-US credit cards but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had the same issue.

I used them last year and they asked the same of me - apparently their bank require it. Overall a good service from them and very good prices.

seems to have become a standard antifraud step for the US accepting orders from outside the country by credit card.

like a padlock on your tender it seems more a detterent than anything but seems to be widely used.

Can't be too carefull!

Another "security" wheeze I got involved in recently when buying online from USA, was to have an insignificant amount taken off my card by the seller, whereupon I had to contact my credit card issuer to find out the precise amount ($1.75) and then email the company again with this info, to show I was genuine. Needless to say, they did remember to take the balance.

It was a pain, took several days all told, but worked eventually.

I have to say when credit cards first came out the whole idea was that they were simple and quick. Now the whole process has become so complicated and seemingly dangerous that I've taken to paying cash for virtualy everything and just keep a wad of £20's in my pocket and use Switch when I'm running out.

But the ease with which you can make quite large transactions on the phone without any query is quite worrying so I have a card with a low credit limit which I use on the Internet. If someone hacks the number I wont use my shirt.

I 've just received a email from Greece about the insurance on the boat and they want me to fax a declaration/authorisation for them to clear first I guess and fax a copy of the front and back of the card or show it when I turn up. Fax is old hat now but strikes me as being a lot safer than wacking numbers down the internet.

End of boring thought of the day - time for un verre.

by implication you have other cards with larger limits that you hand out to any old tom dick or harry every day..........with every little detail they need to use it.

No solutions - just highlighting that the internet is just like any other purchase and basically most peoples card details are in the public domain, as are bank details, whether we like it or not.
