I was just wondering. Is it best to wash the boat with river water as river water has a very mild abrasive quality due to impurities. Then sluicing off with tap water. Certainly I have noticed that washing with salt water has a scouring effect although it is then imperative to sluice the salt off afterwards.

Well dont wash it with heavy water or that may increase the draft.

Actually, when did you last wash a boat at all Byron? This sounds like a wind up to me.

Maybe my answer to the new regs thread about East Anglia might liven things up a bit for yoU ?

Hi Byron,

I guess not 'all' impurities have an abrasive quality, however I always use river water for washing the boat and to date it has always been fine, but then I am exclusively on the non-tidal part of the Thames. I dont think that tap water is totally 'without' impurities, as the media is always informing us of. I remember the TV prog where a river skipper held a mug over the side of his boat and 'appeared' to drink the water from the mug. How many river birds do we see crapping in the river 24/7? I rest my case :D !!

We always try and use tap water to wash the boat, then scrub it with trusty EVM (cant beat the stuff) and then rinse off with tap water again. We do aim to keep a clean boat, scrubbing salt water off is a pain in the rear at times though.

Was going to wash ours today while winterising, but she's still shiny from the Stargard I applied in March!

I was astonished!

Same here. NC is coming out early March again for her annual lift out, scrub, drive service and anode change so you shall be able to see her one year on from her polish still like a shiny new penny:D

She shoudnt need more than a quick hand wax next year to keep her gleaming and a fresh coat or two of antifoul. Unfortunatley the next lift out is time to sand back the old antifoul and start afresh, not a job we are looking forward too.:(

Must be a while since you washed a boat at Ramsgate.... Memory plays tricks as we get older:D:D:D
