Boat Values

"So are you selling for 40% less than you paid for it in line with your views?"

My view states that the market has not yet allowed for red other than some slowing down in sales which may be caused by it, so why should I discount my boat when the market has not?

"Well lets look at a Sealine S25 at circa £60K, bang slap in the middle of that group. Single KAD 32/dp, whats that using, 5 gallons an hour max?
Extra 60p a litre, times 4.4 makes about £2-60 a gallon, so what, about another tenner an hour if red diesel goes"

I am really talking about cruising boats and have done throughout all threads on this subject, however taking your example, in Swansea we pay £1.30 per gallon - that goes up to say £5.20 (allows a toucj past forecourt price) and extra £3.90 per gallon so the fuel costs in your example go from £6.50 per hour to £26 per hour an extra £19.50 per hour - a fair hike for most folks!

"At least you've acknowledged one thing now and that is there is no prospect of any public support outside the boating fraternity for the continuance of the red diesel derogation. "

Mike, I have always stated that we will not get public support right through every thread. I stated I admired the MBM campaign but did not think it would work because we would not get public support.

I have further stated that the only way to win is to demonstrate the lack of revenue, even drop in revenue likely and the practical problems. I was assured by Kim that the RYA was working for MoBo's behind the scenes and so left it at that.

"Regarding the Med, there will always be price anomalies in every market but I've bought 2 boats in the Med in the last 2 yrs and I did thoroughly research the market in the UK and the Med for the type of boat I wanted. I found no evidence that Med boats are priced significantly lower than the UK and I would say, now that the Euro is so strong against Sterling, prices might even be higher in the Med in Sterling terms"

I did say this could vary from model but there is little doubt that there are some price differntials. What size and cost of boats did you purchase? Its only the lower end ones I referred to.

"Your argument concerning barriers to trade is contradictory. Firstly, with flights now so cheap, it costs only a few pounds to inspect a boat or carry out a seatrial. "

Very few people bother to do trips allover Europe looking at £60 k boats, the air travel, the time, the hotels etc put many off. I did not do it because it would have been so time consuming and that was for a fairly high value boat.

"Secondly, if your associate was willing to spend 10% of the value of his boat to buy it abroad, why wont a foreign buyer be willing to spend 10% of the value of a boat to buy it in the UK if the market here should fall?"
Very few people trade with Europe at my friends level. However there would be just as many both ways ... yes.

"So, the idea that a 30% price differential between the UK and Med markets can be sustained is very unlikely "

I stated that this would only apply to the lower end and I can see a situation where that could happen, yes.
