Hi,

I am considering importing the above boat from the USA (yes, I've read almost every conceivable argument both for and against). This question is still part of the deliberation process, and I'm not firmly decided either way.

As I can find no UK Glastron 259 for sale, I was wondering if anyone with more expert knowledge here would be able to suggest the market value for a 2007 rendition of this boat with a 5.0 Volvo Penta?

I know a brand new one is listed at circa. £60K, but I don't have enough experience to work out my own valuation of a 4 year old imported version.

If the valuations given here are at, above or slightly below what I can buy the boat for, then I will pursue this is as a viable option despite all the additional hassle.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig.

It isn't imperative, it's just a specific example as part of a 'viability' study. I know I can buy the boat for circa. 37K imported, inclusive of all taxes at this end and everything on the American side. But if I would lose too much simply because it's an import, I will simply spend the winter season seeking out the best value boat here and save the additional hassle.

The boat job aint like the car job
Being 'an import' as it were is not that detrimental when it comes to resale values if thats what yer on about, ref the boat scene
I havent bothered to look at USA prices etc etc recently
Maybe things have changed, I must admit I dunno
Right now I think the hassle of importing a vessel kinda unseen from the States is not worth the gamble it was 6 or 7 years ago
There seems to be loads of Sportsboats for sale in the UK at sensible money imho

I never understood the "import" stigma; all US, Canadian, French, German, Italian, (Turkish, Norwegian- outside the EU etc) boats are imports. I can't imagine any mainstream manufacturer exporting to the EU would use dedicated non CE marked parts for their home markets; the parts on my Four Winns have both EU and USCG markings (the USCG are possibly more stringent than the EU ones !)

The fact that you cant find any in the UK will make the valuation almost impossible. But if we say the quality of the Glastron is between a Bayliner and a Four Winns then I would guess a valuation of £37500 ( Based on 2007 Bayliner 265 @35k and a 2007 Four Winns 258 @40k.)

Theres loads of good deals to be had in the UK at the moment, I dont think its worth the hassle to save 1 or 2k.

While you might get a valuation of mid £30k's, I doubt you would get much over £30k from a purchaser. You can get a 4 or 5 year old Glastron 249/269 for £30-£35k, which would put pressure on the value of your petrol boat.

As an example, we are currently listing a UK dealer supplied Glastron GS269 with Volvo diesel power for £32,500. 2006 flavour.
It aint mint, but about £500 of titivating and it would be from what I can tell...

YOU WILL NOT GET THE SAVINGS YOU HOPE FOR right at the moment unless you stumble across a repo or distressed sale.
Shipping will be a few K, import duty and VAT will add a BIG chunk and remember CE marking too.
You say you have taken all this into account, but my own guess is the boat will be no better value than a UK example based on current exchange rates etc.

That said... it is kind of fun doing it all yourself even if it costs you a little more(?)...

import

We just worked on an import guy got what he thought was a good deal. Until running up the river and the bilge pump came on.

Found half his block in the bilge. All cracked and blew out. So new engine. Then when we got our hands on it found the transom steering worn and leaking. Also when that was removed the transom soggy. Trim tabs were leaking and bung plate. So all removed and dried out with IR lamps, resealed and refitted.

New transom plate and substantial "thousands" later a not so good deal. Also converting the electrics with a transformer so the 110 could be used.

And a yankie trailer that no good. I think that was all. Dont take the dealer or persons you are buying from that its all serviced and a good runner!!

A few weeks ago when I was looking on the boats for sale websites I noticed numerous adverts for US Bayliners etc all which looked worth the money. And I was tempted but worrying about the security of my money made me hesitate. So on this forum I asked a question as to what security one had if one paid "Up Front" and nobody replied with a scenario to outline "Deposit Protection" But if these sellers were a valid sales organisation surely they would have a couple of boats in the UK for people to buy.
Look at how many people who recently bought Kitchens only to find out that the day after they paid their £8 or £10,000 deposit they the firm had gone bump and they have now joined the 10% club. Surely they can afford to get just a couple of boats to the UK so you can see them, and perhaps if its a LTD Company download their Balance Sheet to find out their finances are up to date. One suggestion was that I should go to the States myself and really this is the only way to do it. Buy the boat over there, find an export freight firm, plonk it in a container and wait the 3 weeks for it to arrive here, pay the £800 for the CE thing, and the VAT, Job Done.

Thanks for all of your input, everyone.

It's certainly cemented my decision NOT to import from the USA, even if a few thousand could maybe just about be saved. The risk/hassle/stigma
(however right or wrong it may be, it still exists) doesn't bode well with me.

I was certainly enthusiastic about finding out more, but the further I investigate the more I realise I could do without all of the extra considerations.

Hi Craig - I just sent you a PM as I am considering selling my 2007 Glastron 269. It's the diesel model, with a good spec and very low hours. (Usual story, I have only used it a few hours since new and just can't justify keeping it!). She's berthed in Chichester Marina. A lot cheaper than importing, plus this is a UK spec boat. Just drop me a note if you are interested, and we can chat.

A friend of mine went on holiday to the States and while he was there he bought one of these enormous motorhomes, the sellers arranged transport and it was sent over. He has now done this twice and saves a fortune.
With a boat depending on the hight it could go in a container.
The only thing that would stop me buying any boat from overseas is the safety of my money, I really did consider buying a US Bayliner from people who advertise over here but I did not proceed as I wanted a boat NOW not in 3 months time or whatever time it takes to send it over.
So if I was in a position to spend £30K I would go over there, go to a Glastron Dealer, do a "How much for cash" deal, buy one, arrange a container, and return.
Plus the fact you can insist on one built in 2011 not somthing built in 2009 and sitting in storage awaiting sale.
Many car dealers, working from home in the UK, import Mustangs etc., it cant be that difficult.
