I'm thinking of bringing Jissel home for the winter for a bit of TLC. Unfortunately, a 2 ton, 24ft bilge keeler is a little too much for my Peugeout 106 to tow even if I had a suitable trailer.

Is it possible/realistic to hire a flatbed with a Hiab to pick the boat up from a wide slipway and drop it into a field near home, or is there a better DIY alternative?

If not, which transport company would you recommend?

Boat's in Gosport, home's N London

You could always hire a car transport trailer (suitable for boat displacement & preferably flat bed) along with a 4x4. It'll almost certainly be cheaper than winter storage in the solent area, never mind the time & money spent driving to gosport every weekend to do the work. If I could get my boat home for the winter (Twister @ 4.5 tons) then I'd save a fortune.

I sold a boat recently, 28ft triple keel, and the purchaser used a firm with a flat bed lorry and hiab - would lift 2T over the back of lorry, much more over the side. Loaded boat held on with just two webbing straps around bow and stern.

I think it cost about £500 from Solent to Bristol, including use of hiab at each end for lifting.

It was bigger than 7.5T lorry though, so HGV required.

Sorry, can't remember the name, but came from the west country.

We had our 29ft yacht moved by flatbed from Poole to the Clyde, by Beverly Transport Services. Cost around 800 inc VAT.

Couldn't fault the service, or the care that they took. The yard said they'd never seen anyone spend so long securing a yacht on a transporter!

You could try a company in Southampton called Boatloads Ltd who have several diferent rigs to transport boats, they have reasonable charges and are reliable.

I've no connection - just a happy customer!
