I am toying with the idea of bringing my boat back home for the winter - possibly longer - and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to companies to use.

The boat is at SYH and home is Northants way.

The thinking is that I have quite a lot of work to do on it and it's more likely to happen if the boat is parked in the garden than if it's 100 miles (and £30 ) away.

Thoughts anyone?

Debbage sold the transport buisness to P J Downs (http://www.pjdownsandsons.co.uk/) a few years back. I have used him twice to bring boats back to and from Cambridge, and shall be doing so again this winter. HIghly recommended.

He has a self unloading trailer that will take boats upto about 7 tons. Makes for a big saving on cranes at the home end. :)

He doesn't like using SYH because they are slow and unreliable with timings, but he sorted me a good deal for lifting out plus mast at Foxes (better than SYH).

Just remembered he brought my mast to Cambridge 18 months ago, as it was cheaper to do that than have SYH varnish it!

Most peeps seem to agree Debbages are the boys.
I've had good results from Burni Transport at Burnham on Crouch. Speak to Dale. He can sometimes do it cheaper if he can use a trailer and Landrover, but a Liz 29 might be too big.

or you could try Ross from C-Wey Boat Transport from West Mersea, 01206 381765 or 07776 487889.

He has a lovely air suspension truck and trailer and brought a Sigma 38 back from the South Coast with half a cup of coffee in the sink, not a drop spilled. A nice chap, local lifeboatman as well.

Ross moved our first boat from Wisbech to Foxes and later, moved our current boat from Cardiff to Wisbech. As said, really nice chap. Was cheaper than PJ Downes at the time, but the self unloading aspect (especially if it has to be unloaded in the garden) is likely to be a major advantage.

Gonna cost 5 or 600 hundred all in.... thats a lot of return journeys in the car....

About 15 round trips, and 50 hours travelling. That equates to a lot of extra time working on the boat! It costs me significantly more than than to get CdG home, but I still consider it worth it, especially as I can get her undercover.

Do you take her home to Cambridge every winter?

This'll be the second time in 4 years. Plan is to bring her back every other year. Last winter out (09/10) she had the iron keel off, which was a bigger job than I could do, so she had to be in a yard.

In the end I decided to use PJ Downs to transport the boat, and found them very friendly and helpful, and great value. Not having to hire a crane at the home end saves a lot of money. Highly recommended
