Boat Suggestions Please!!!

Hi All,

Looking to upsize to a 45-50 footer.

Criteria are (in no order of importance):

Centre cockpit
Comfortable passage making
Ketch
Minimum 3 cabins plus saloon
Owners stateroom for at anchor plus passage berths for when not.
Budget £80 - £100k
Good manoeuvrability
Pretty!

Not much to ask!

We have viewed a Colvic 50 - too heavy, not pretty enough.
Also viewed a Westerly Oceanmaster 48 - pretty, but - within our price range - not a stateroom.

All suggestions welcomed!

Once you're in the fortunate position to be looking in that size / price range, best bet is to head for the USA, where you will find a much better selection at much lower prices.

On the face of it.......yes. However when you factor VAT, transport, and RCD compliance it can negate any apparent savings.

Not a size range I've any real experience of - probably the same for most regulars here. My initial reaction is 50 foot + 100K = knackered. Happy to be proved wrong.

Very few "modern" production boats ie less than 25 years old to fit those criteria - and budget too small for decent newer boat (and probably few ketches anyway) of that size.

So, you are limited to one of many older custom or homebuild designs - lots of potentials, but as they would have only been built in very small numbers, difficult to find, particularly if you want ready to go with minimal expenditure. As already suggested you would do better in USA, but of little help if you want to use the boat in Europe.

Yes, but only one of them in Europe in the budget range - which illustrates the problem. Very few boats that meet the criteria and budget.

Amel make bigguns. As observed above, there are far more boats of this size in the states as buying new in that size bracket is the preserve of the alarmingly wealthy; up to 15 years ago there were very few european production boats of that size compared to the american market. The respective used boat markets reflect this, even if buying in the states doesn't save you money it will afford far more boats from which to pick what you want.
