Watching "Cross The Atlantic", and all they seem to go on about is the smell - apparently feet, milk, gin, sweat, vomit...

Is this not something that happens on wooden boats? Crystal always just smells of varnish and wine...

Quite seriously, is there a scientific reason for this, or do I just have an awful sense of smell?

Well, you're one of the lucky ones Kris, that your boat smells so sweet. Varnish and wine are very easy to put up with. Some immature blokes descend to caveman standards of existence through sloth once they are away from women. It has nothing to do with the boat; it's the crew who are slovenly and stupid enough to tell the world about it. They probably think that this is "Macho", but I find it hard to understand.
Peter.

I too find it strange, Peter. Without consciously making an effort, we try and keep the cabin aired properly all the time, and the co-owner has developed an affection for incense cones, purchasable for pennies in hippie shops. We also use candles quite a lot whilst moored, which helps to lessen the effect of tobacco smoke, and we just don't use the heads!!

I certainly don't want to be bringing people aboard a small floating replica of my bedroom when aged 12! Although let's not talk about the washing up...
