The boatshow salesmen are still a living example to us all in the art of ensuring their employers don’t over pressure the production lines.
There we were, 2 chaps one looking to re-engine with lumps of around 350-400HP. Ready to do a deal for the right lumps that would fit.

In the gate at 10:00 and there is the Perkins Sabre stand. Up pops a young lady and shock horror she knows what the bloody hell she’s talking about and I mean in detail. Curves, mounting kits the lot. Spent the best part of an hour with her and came away with the feeling that she could well be making her bonus by the end of the day. Could it be that at last, the engine stands would be populated by people that knew their products and wanted to sell them?

Yanmar stand, stood there for about 10 mins while the reps wandered around talking to each other and drinking coffee. Got pissed off looking at the paint so we wandered on.

Volvo Penta, despite the nausea we walked onto the stand looked at the green things and were told that the person that could help us wasn't on the stand could we come back later this afternoon or tomorrow.

MTU they had a cracking package .It even had the golden rocker box’s. What they didn’t have was the price or even a clue when they would have one.

Mermaid instantly shook there heads and ran for the stand cubby hole as soon as we said what size engines we wanted.

Iveco couldn’t be bothered to come out of the glass box at the back of the stand.

Man had just the job the only problem was that there were another 10 cylinders attached to the 2 that were giving us our 350HP. It would have fitted a treat if the SWIMBO concerned would have agreed to a 4 berth engine room (what’s the problem, women).

All in all only one manufacturer was interested in making a sale. God help the first person that says sales were slow or down this year.

Bosses if you want to make your dividend this year you’ll need to kick your reps lazy asses into gear because at the moment the show is part of their holiday entitlement.

In case you’re interested we’re not sure the Cats that Sabre finally offered us will go in so we’re going back on Sunday to talk to Pearl about a 47 or a 55 for next year.

What do you mean the sea gull in front's walking !!!

At least you got one interested.

For reasons which I'll put in a seperate post when I get around to it, I've just spent 3 days at the Cannes boat show. The salespeople there are atrocious , theinterestingthing is if you say 'I'm British' they try and move you off the stand !! The fact I live there is another matter.

The pits are S**s**ker. Even my mother-in - law was taking the p*** out of them by Day 2 and the closest she'd been to a boat before that was a Cruise liner. She even told one of them to smarten up and do some work !! Yes !!

...I wanna boat please..

Don't be too hard on the Chris., its hard work sitting and sinking endless cups of coffee and then being bothered by customers.

about time the industry bucked it's ideas up - just the reason I posted the message - What bugs you about......

Keep me posted on more crap service and if you find any good service tell me that too.

The young lady on the Sabre stand outshone the lot of them. She's the only one I'd even consider employing. That's not the sexist angle, she's just pure value for money.

ChrisP :o))))

th einteresting question must be 'Are they really there to sell the engines for the manufacturer?'
Some are but many are only there to answer questions and highlight the products features... price is a seperate issue to discuss with the retail outlet of your choice ie. whoever is doing the re-engine job!
Similar issue on electronic stands etc

It makes me wonder also...

Last year I wanted a new outboard (100-115HP). So I went onto all the marine vendor websites and got the e-mail addresses. I then e-mailed 22 of these organisations that sold Merc / Yamaha / Suzuki.

Only 2 replies!! (One couldn't help)

The Suzuki dealer (MGA Water Sports in Rochdale) was hot off the mark and had the sale closed in under an hour. Great service as well.

What hapened to all the rest??? Whats the point of an e-mail box, or indeed a stand at the boat show, if you dont attend to the customers??

had this with Garmin - wouldn't sell me a thing only said go see a retail stand, what's the point - those stands cost a fotune - I should know putting stuff on at the NEC is bad enough, save the money and give us consumers a better price. If all they want to do is show a static lump of metal just have a brochure stand at a tenth of the size and cost :-)

I've had similar experiences - talked to "salesmen" about technical features and they have'nt a clue, the only exception was Adverc and the stand selling Rutgerson clutches - he gave me the contact name and address and received a spare part - FOC, by return of post.
We also were with a friend who was very keen to buy a new yacht -35/37' - for blue water sailing and no-one was interested - perhaps it was because she(yes it was a woman AND she had the readies) was not dressed in the latest designer gear and didn't look as if she had two pennies to rub together - she got so pissed off with not even being able to get on boats and the crass ignorance of the staff about all the technical details she wanted to know that she gave up and eventully bought a good sh boat.

dickh
I'd rather be sailing... :-)
