The boatshow salesmen are still a living example to us all in the art of ensuring their employers don’t over pressure the production lines.
There we were, 2 chaps one looking to re-engine with lumps of around 350-400HP. Ready to do a deal for the right lumps that would fit.
In the gate at 10:00 and there is the Perkins Sabre stand. Up pops a young lady and shock horror she knows what the bloody hell she’s talking about and I mean in detail. Curves, mounting kits the lot. Spent the best part of an hour with her and came away with the feeling that she could well be making her bonus by the end of the day. Could it be that at last, the engine stands would be populated by people that knew their products and wanted to sell them?
Yanmar stand, stood there for about 10 mins while the reps wandered around talking to each other and drinking coffee. Got pissed off looking at the paint so we wandered on.
Volvo Penta, despite the nausea we walked onto the stand looked at the green things and were told that the person that could help us wasn't on the stand could we come back later this afternoon or tomorrow.
MTU they had a cracking package .It even had the golden rocker box’s. What they didn’t have was the price or even a clue when they would have one.
Mermaid instantly shook there heads and ran for the stand cubby hole as soon as we said what size engines we wanted.
Iveco couldn’t be bothered to come out of the glass box at the back of the stand.
Man had just the job the only problem was that there were another 10 cylinders attached to the 2 that were giving us our 350HP. It would have fitted a treat if the SWIMBO concerned would have agreed to a 4 berth engine room (what’s the problem, women).
All in all only one manufacturer was interested in making a sale. God help the first person that says sales were slow or down this year.
Bosses if you want to make your dividend this year you’ll need to kick your reps lazy asses into gear because at the moment the show is part of their holiday entitlement.
In case you’re interested we’re not sure the Cats that Sabre finally offered us will go in so we’re going back on Sunday to talk to Pearl about a 47 or a 55 for next year.
