Hi all if one could point me towards a simple gsm type alarm device that does not cost an arm and half a leg it would be much appreciated.
Also if anyone has any masterful genius ideas they use as deterrent`s/alarms etc please let us know,
Its a bit of a case of locking the gate after the horse has bolted but how and ever needs to be done,
all help greatfuly received.

We sell CCTV equipment and everything is 12 volts including the DVD recorder so well suited to a boat. I'm not really a fan of alarms, you get an alert to let you know someone has broken in - more often than not a false alarm! But what are you going to do about it? Far better to get some lovely clear footage of the person or people doing the deed.

A boat is quite easy to cover camera wise, especially inside. It isn't hard to store footage for well over a month, especially when using motion triggered recording. We were messing about with a test mule we've got and were looking a footage recorded in October, that section of the hard drive was only 65% full and we get over 100 events a day!!!

Remote viewing is harder to achieve. We do have a GSM based DVR which allows remote access for live viewing, 2 way audio and even gps tracking but it isn't cheap and setting it up is a load of a hassle to the point where we don't Market it on our website. A "normal" DVR is far more simple to set up tucked away somewhere nice and safe and cheaper.

Have a look at our website http://www.cctv42.co.uk not so much to buy something but for loads of advice on what to look for if you do want to go down the CCTV route. Feel free to call during office hours and myself or Matt will happily give you no obligation help or advice for free

I use GPS tracker on my boat. It uses a simcard and is hidden somewhere in the boat. I can track the boat whilst I am not in the marina by sending a text to the device number and it will immidiately text back with its GPS location and a link to google map.

They cost between £100 - £300.

The problem with that is it doesn't help if someone just breaks into your boat. The boat doesn't move anywhere, you just lose your telly, nav gear, outboard etc and have to repair the damage to the doors or windows.

You also need to be in range of a GSM signal (I'm assuming your sim card allows international roaming). Do you also have a monthly fee for the SIM card?

For not a lot more you could have a couple of cameras a full D1 resolution CCTV DVR and a solid state hard drive (to avoid problems with bumping). Zero on costs and with a bit of luck you'll know who the person carrying out the dirty deed was when you see them on screen.

I have prob gone over the top on security for my boat but to start with I bought one of these http://www.eye-spy-security.co.uk/ Im with o2 and I thought £10 a month would be good but last time I put credit on was Oct last yr, it hardly goes off as its locked down below. It takes 5 pics and sends them as mms to me and also txt you if mains power goes off, thats really useful as Ive had to contact marina before to put it back on, I have also connected it up to a wireless smoke alarm and door and window sensors.

Then in Nov I was hit badly by a boat who didnt leave his details and that really annoyed me so I went into Maplins and had a play, as you can take things back I got 4 cameras and 2 recorders took them all back apart from one camera and a recorder. cost about £129 for the recorder and £60 for camera. I mounted the camera on the roof under TV scanner and it points down on swim platform it is fairly loud as it stands out but that is good. It has already done its job as I have footage of another boat hitting me. It records anyone getting on the boat as well as anyone bumping it. I may get 2 more camers for each side.

I am happy that the power is on so I know the heaters are on and if anyone hits me Ive got it recorded

I to sell security products in my day job. In fact I design the stuff. However, for my boat I went for C-Pod

I recognised the in depth bespoke approach that C-Pod have achieved similar to what we have done in our markets, so it was an easy decision to make

How about something like these...
e-bay
e-bay

Then you'd know by text that the alam had triggered and you should have a picture of the scrote too.
The images might not be as good as a dedicated CCTV and alarm system but it depends what you want to spend.

I use this as well, its good and does what it say on the tin you can also phone in and use the device to listen in. My boat is in Spain the camera has a UK sim card and I just top it up every now and then here in the Uk... Also have one in my Villa as I said does what it says on the tin... :):)

Thanks for all the replies so far,ive followed all the links and searched Google, any other ideas out there?

Is wiring it up to door sensors and smoke alarm a standard feature or did you have to adapt it in any special way ??

Hi Mike

You can add any wireless item to it not just sensors anything wireless. Its just a question of press hold button at the back and it looks for devices, so a door sensor you would open and close, and then you name it so you could have 2 doors door one and door 2, in my case its door and window, so when you get a txt it says door alarm. and at any point you txt it #03# and it will take a picture live and send it to you in seconds. The one on ebay above is the kiddy.

They are sensative so the room would need to be dark as a cloud moving over the sun that has shade sets it off in the summer. mine is below and all doors and blinds are shut.

Hope that helps

Phill
