Boat search:Short hop coastal cruiser that sails well -gk24 or...?

Three other suggestions. All good sea boats, but quick and sood sailers as well:

Verl 790 (similar to Trapper 300 and Seawolf 26), Anderson 26 and Evolution 25/26.

Sonatas are an absolute delight to sail, but if you take them offshore they can become very tiring due to their light displacement and lively motion. You might want to consider this if you buy a crusier racer and anticipate doing longer passages.

My 1st proper yot; an Ecume de mer. Brought for £2500 in 1987 (it was a mess). Identical layout to GK24 but a bit roomier at 26', and probably a better sea boat. 1500+ built, but unfortunately most of them are in France.

Others: Dufour 1800 and the Hustler 25.5 or the closely related Oyster 26.

The other Vega owners will shoot me for this, but I would say if you want a dinghy-like experience then look elsewhere. I have both a Wayfarer and a Vega and I know which one I prefer to take out for a quick spin of an afternoon. On the other hand if you want to cover the miles at speed and in comfort, the Vega does a very good job.

Has anybody mentioned the Achilles 24 yet? Can be had quite cheaply and well thought of. Low headroom but supposedly sails like a dinghy.

The other options is the quarter-tonner route (Ecume, Ethygene, and numerous similar designs), and again these are often quite cheap.
