Much cheaper than I was quoted! Maybe they saw me coming. Sounds like its worth doing then. Not only does it save you the fuel and mooring costs of doing the trip by sea but also the cost of any unexpected breakdowns

True, but don't forget that you have to transport the boat back to the UK for the refit first and then requote transport from UK to Barcelona.;)

Surely, you've allowed a chunk in the deal for transportation. The selling broker, through contacts and 'needs must' should be able to get it moved 'effectively' for less than you :confused:

Only just seen this thread.
I met a really nice Irishman here in CF and yesterday, we "put the world to rights" - several bottles of wine and a couple of pizzas later the world disappeared into a kind of mist.
Its a bit rough this morning - not the sea - me.

It seems that road transport would be best but if you do decide on the slow trip round and you can get her here to CF, we could both run together from CF to SC. I'm not sure about crew at the moment for our return to SC.
SWMBO will be on board anyway but if we had other friends with us maybe we could split our crew and help with the leg from Carloforte to Sant Carles.
As you know, we pootle anyway so your new boat should have the range - longest leg from here to SC is 189 miles.
We will be looking for a large weather window for our return anyway.

You say that you haven't got the time yourself but if a plan to take the boat to Spain on its own bottom could be made, it might leave things open for you to join at various stages on the way.
For example, we intend staying here in CF until the end of Aug - so you could jump on a flight from Stanstead to Cagliari and be here yourself.

This way, maybe the forum can do this delivery - just like old times!!

Well, just listen to my first world problem: was playing with racecars yesterday and must have been working harder than a man of my tonnage should do. In brief, my head appears to have been perspiring freely and, as a consequence, I have what would have to be characterised as a helmet problem...:D

Sounds like a sensible cost, to be honest. And if that's from either of the two companies I previously linked, both have a decent reputation.
Btw, in the meantime I re-checked the notes of my 2006 trip, from the top N of the Adriatic to S Sardinia: 1100nm, 125hours, 8.8kts average, almost 3500 liters overall.
We actually kept a relatively high D speed during that trip, and your boat is a bit smaller/lighter, so probably there's room for saving some hundreds liters by making it even slower.
But in several places along the route there's no practical choice other than marinas for overnighting, so overall it's still an expensive trip anyway - also without considering engine wear/hours/potential inconveniences.
Bottom line, In your boots I would have the new pride and joy trucked, rather than pay the trip costs to anyone else for having fun with her.

At which latitude along the E coast is she at the moment?
I suppose the quotation is for the shortest possible road trip, which dictates the port of unload, and in turn the best route for Barcelona.
It might still make sense going across to Sardinia - though probably to Bonifacio Strait rather around the South, unless the boat is currently in the deep South of the Adriatic...

Its near Ancona, so not quite half way down. I reckon its about 900nm to CF so probably about 2100 litres at displacement speed assuming 2nm per gallon.
Not sure on fuel cost in Italy but it would need one fuel stop - I am assuming €1.50/l on the water so €3,000 vs €6,000 for the road transport (in VAT and crane charges each end.

Maybe I can have a few weeks off sick this summer

Put it on the truck - even if it costs more.
The prices you have - where have the transport companies quoted to deliver to?
 
From Ancona, the nearest/most convenient unloading area on the W coast is around Viareggio.
And from there, the shortest route to St.Carles (but didn't Jez mention Barcelona?) would be along Liguria and SoF.
Which is well above 400nm anyway, hence the differential of the two alternatives is in the 900nm ballpark, rather a bit less than more.
Still a long way though, no doubt about it.
Besides, along the northern coastal route there would be plenty of ports of call anywhere, just in case.
Actually, that's also true of the Adriatic route, heading S from Ancona, but you wouldn't want an unexpected trouble along the passages from Sicily to Sardinia and from CF to the Balearics.
Decisions, decisions.... :)
 
Oh - I see from the OP
I didn't realise that you were just planning on transporting to the west coast of Italy.
It makes more sense to me that once it is loaded onto a transporter, to somehow continue all the way to SC by road.
Even if it costs more - it has got to be less hassle and much more reliable.
You could offload and block off in the SC boatyard and have some A/F and anodes etc done before launch.
