me :- what happened ?

him :- well it was like this, I got on, cast off, jumped into helm seat then remembered what I had forgotten, I left the power key in my car !!!!!!!!!!!!

Presumably he also forgot to take his paddle or set of oars with him,which any experienced person using a small boat which is capable of being paddled always takes with them for emergencies,should the main motive power decline to function..?

TRUE! One should never cast off until ensuring all is working as it should. Similarly one should never switch off until securely tied up.
