Hi all,

Going to my brothers place in Begur end of May for a week. Anyone know of a place on the coast near Begur, one of the marinas maybe, where I can hire a boat for a day possibly two. 30-35ft cruiser.

Cheers

The biggest marina on that coast is Empuriabrava. I don't know if there are any boat charter co's there but it's got to be worth giving the MARINA a call

Yes you can rent a boat in Empuriabrave but they need a copy of your docs. Not sure what that entails but one of my German colleagues told me they certainly ask for "your licence"

I have a house and boat in Empuriabrava.

There are a couple of "boat hire" concerns there. Dont know if they do 30 ft plus boats though. You dont need a license (ICC) if you just want to potter around the canals. If you want to go out to sea then I think you will need proof of a license, and if my memory serves me right, the largest boat I have seen is around 25 ft. see here http://www.thalassaboat.com/boat.htm
Good luck

Hi Mikemwf, yeah saw that site, and the 26 footer as the largest. I'm thinking that it would be nice to have something over night. But with a 7yo and a 6 mo (by then!) it'll be tricky...maybe go for day boat. It's not cheap really 700 Euros for a 26 foot boat for 1 day seems a joke :S

Thanks tho will call them!

Cheers.

Hi Sneds,
Yes it is a great spot. Plenty to see and do. We have been based there for around 8 years now. Mooring fees are very reasonable (around £2300 per year including electrics, water showers and toilets) Only 3/4 hour from Girona Airport.

I suppose it has to be something like that since the tourist season in Empuriabrava is very short (less than 2 months) There are low and mid season rates I believe. Perhaps you can haggle a mid season rate at the extremilties of the peak season rate. Like most things Spanish if you turn up on the day and flash cash I'm sure you'll get a deal in these recessionary times.
As you probably know in the summer it chops up for a few hours around mid-day so try and get out as early as you can to enjoy great flat seas. Check out Cala Mongo (towards Begur) Medas Is or to the north Cala Monjoi etc etc

Thanks David, in fact I do not know the seas/area at all. My brother has just bought a villa in Begur, and were are there for a week 26th May. Begur looks perfect for a relaxing week but again not been there either! Looks like I better do some research on that water then...you say it blows up mid day ish?

yeh! In the summer it's almost regular as clockwork, we are only talking f3 but it makes it a bit choppy in a small boat. By late afternoon it's calm again. I'll mention Cala Mongo again because it's got a beautiful clean beach in a wine glass bay, lovely safe swimming so great for kids. Not that far from Begur so drive out and have a look. Gets a bit busy mid summer though.

When we cruised the Costa Brava last August, the wind got up to a lot more than F3 in the afternoons, more like F5-6, especially north of Roses and I would definitely not want to be out in a small boat off some of the headlands

Yes I understand and have experienced the situation. Always difficult to know, when you're tucked up in a bay, and it blows the usual f3 whether this is the start of a f5-6 or just the max of the day. Local forecasts are generally fairly good though

seems a bit gusty today!!!

We won't be going far. 7 yo and a 6 month old baby! So it's going to have to be local. I wanted something nearer 32 feet so that's a bit of a bummer...unless of course any of you guys are out there and I could furnish you with drink and food for the day for a trip with you somewhere. /wink
