Boat removal

Likely to be RTS related. A new flood alleviation scheme is planned for the area below St Aines upon Thames. Its no good having abandoned vessels in areas where major civil engineering works are going to take place in order to shift the water in larger volumes.

Part of the RTS will involve channel engineering downstream of Desborough cut (bed lowering) and an additional weir in Sunbury lock cut.

Interesting scheme which is getting close to acquiring the Development Consent Order.

The RTS is promoted by the Environment Agency and Surrey County Council.

I suspect this is just the start of a general move to clear the area of unauthorised vessels.

Sunbury weir and the sluices have had too many Boats going through or into them during high flow events.

The fatal rowing accident last October was partly related to a vessel blocking radial gates on the main Sunbury weir.

It's been driven by the local MP. Taken her ages to organise and get court orders and then have multi agency action - Council, Environment Agency, Police etc. Local residents fed up with aggressive, drunk, drugged boat owners stopping them walking along the river. Dumping rubbish, using the local area as toilets, drug dealing and being massive ignorant pain in the arse

Yes. That is what the PSPO is about but it seems to me to not be random that the EA are acting just before the RTS is due to get the development consent order.

I understand and agree that the public land has been degraded and it needed sorting out. No question about that at all.

However the Desborough cut is EA owned not council property.

BAIRNS PRIDE moored (and sinking) on Desborough Island EA 24h moorings is into its fifth occupation year. EA say because if its size they dont have the budget to move it. Sadly if they had dealt with it as an overstayer 4 years ago it would not now be a problem. Incidentally the EA do know who the owner is. The clearances they have done recenty was long overdue and very welcome.

I wish I had your confidence, @oldgit

Langstone have Harbour Masters and a nautically aligned council.
We have "Waterways Managers" and the EA

A few abandoned hulls were removed from the Maidenhead area earlier this year - all sorted, and paid for, by private subscription.

It would appear from the article that this only happened due to the fact folks were prepared to talk to each other .
The pass the parcel policy and its always somebody elses fault would appear to achieve a little less..

The EA is skint and is not able to raise income independantly and relying on HMG hand outs which have been cut by over 50% ? in the last 15 years.
The river is lined with some of the wealthest and most affluent local authorities in the kingdom and possibly the ones complaining most loudly about the problem.
H,mm, wondering where a few quid might be found to get this problem solved ,perhaps if somebody stepped up to grab the nettle.
Mebbe a quick whip round at the Henley Regatta would be good start or a £25.00 "voluntary" contribution on top of the registration fee ringfenced for wreck clearance ?
