Hi all.
I have been asked by someone I know if they can use my UK address as a Postal address for registering his boat. He is from Canada and buying a boat on Spain. He has a UK passport and wants to register it in Wales but they need a UK postal address to send out the documentation.
Does anyone know of there is any implication for me legally?
Thanks..

“Someone you know”, therefore not a friend/family who you can trust not to drop you in it……………
They are committing the offence, but you are aiding them. I assume simple boat registration, but maybe finance involved?

If he has a UK passport then surely he already has a UK address in it, but if he gives your address surely he becomes the boats legal owner living at your address
I think if he buys a boat outside the EU and imports it he is liable to tax on the boats value, I would be very aware!

My UK passport has no address in it.

This sounds like the wheeze that enables foreigners to buy Indian registered motor vehicles in India to go travelling. It is an address for documents to be sent but here in the UK there are so many things that depend on your address, including creditworthiness, court service and other consequential things.

British passport or not, if you know him and trust him, it is your risk. But people have been known to steal from their business partners...

He can register it in Part 1 but it will need a tonnage survey and evidence of title going back to previous owners. This is because the register is a register of legal title as well as identifying as a British Ship. Your friend is eligible to use the register because of his UK citizenship but because he is non resident he needs to appoint a representative in the UK. I think that is what he is asking you to do and there is nothing illegal about it and I don't think it requires anything more than being a post box for the documents which after the initial registration and pretty minimal - renewing (with payment) every 5 years and registering any changes.

Does he also want to use your bank account to transfer money from a friend ?

AFAIK UK Passports dont have an adress in them. Mine never have.

Don't forget if the person has or racks up a bad credit rating, this will also be marked against your address even though it's nothing to do with you. I'd advise caution.

I spoke to Cardiff the other day ref a similar issue for a Portuguese friend. The young lady was very helpful. If doing a Part 1 then it is quite ok for a UK resident to be a "representative" and for their address to be used. So if they are doing Part 1, all is ok. They were quite happy for the Portuguese to register his boat as described
PS see Tranonas post as well

That has not been the case for a couple of decades at least. Credit is entirely individual these days for precisely this reason.

Completely irrelevant. There is no money involved, the request is simply to be a UK representative address for correspondence related to registration.

What I say still stands, if a person registered at your address has a bad credit rating then it will be noted against that address. It is unlikely to affect you if your own credit rating since credit is attached to a person not an address, but it is still something you may wish to consider, hence my comment to be cautious.

I'd say it is relevant and to be taken in consideration.

But you can’t get credit at a uk address just by saying you live there (or entering that address on Part 1).

The person wanting to use the address lives in Canada so could not get credit in the UK. he will not be "registered" at the address, but just having the OP nominated as his representative for registering a boat. There is no connection between this register and anything to do with financial matters such as bank accounts or tax, national insurance, electoral roll etc.

Non issue.
