Boat Purchase for Cash?

Has anyone ever come across a boat dealer that will purchase boats for cash, rather than the usual brokerage deal?

The reason I ask is that I have a boat to sell which is probably worth £3000ish or less and I fear that paying storage (~£100/month) for the boat until sold could well make it almost uneconomic to sell, regadless of whether I sell privately or through a broker. (Maybe I'm being to pessamistic about how long it will take to sell but I think it can take a while).

The alternative is to put the boat on the market at a "silly" price and hope to sell quickly, however I am thinking that could backfire because people assume that there is something wrong if the price is too low.

What I really need is the nautical equivalent of a car auction!

Some of the bigger boatjumbles have a for sale lot, where small boats like yours are often sold. It's something to think about and of course theres exchange and mart etc. and a magazine called Boats under 15000 aswell, theres also free adverts on the net, boatsandoutboards.co.uk springs to mind, you might sell it a lot quicker than you think, have you got it advertised yet, get on with it!!

I sold my last boat for cash to a broker - got £12K for it when it was probably worth £14ish. Not sure if he wants more boats but try Yoldings Marine (http://www.yoldingsmarine.co.uk/) or Essex Boatyards who prefer to own rather than broker.

Beware though they will all chip you on the price if it's worth £3k then don't expect them to offer more than £1,500 or so.

As all ready suggested a better bet might be to try Loot and "Boats under £15,000".

Good luck - are you going to replace it with something elses?

Go left, YOUR OTHER left for pete's sake
(IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI)

Waste of time

No dealer is going to give you anything near the cash value of your boat - they are in business to make money, and any cash offer will be way below a sensible price, and will probably cost you a lot more than a years storage.

Its always a problem with unwanted boats - they continue to cost money!

Shop around for somewhere cheaper to keep it while you find a buyer.

Look at it from the dealers point of view: first he too has to pay the storage overheads for an indefinite period. Admittedly nothing like as much as you have to. He has his business overheads - premises, staff, insurance and so on. Then he has to build in an allowance for the possibilty that your boat may have defects for which he could be financially liable to a subsequent buyer....

And he still has to make a living and a profit out of selling your boat on.

Having said that, try Nationwide boats near Sheffield: being a large company they can often make a better offer than most dealers. They took one yacht I had at only 30% below market on a part exchange deal.

But thats still an awful lot of money just for the convenience!

Thanks for all the advice from everyone, anyway it seems that the consenus is that I find somewhere as cheap as possible to store and then I'll try the places you all mentioned to advertise.

I guess it makes sense that if I'm not convinced that I can make much money overall on the sale, I won't find a dealer who is prepared to take on this risk.

Talk to David Morris at the Tollesbury Marina Brokerage.
http://www.tollesbury-marina.co.uk/

He sold a small boat with an asking price of 2.7k for me some years ago.
Nice, pragmatic, helpful ...and not charging you over the odds. He actually did not charge me for the place ashore, despite the long period of approx. 15 months it took to sell our boat.

No worries - just try it

By coincidence that's who I bought my boat from 2 years ago - I wondered if it was the same boat as you sold but I paid more than £2700. I'll definitely give David a call and see what he says.

Deacons brokerage at the top of the Hamble has carved a market niche for sub 10k yachts priced to sell. There is a walk around display area and lots of people about.

I sold a small yacht through them 10 years ago for 3.5K and at a small profit.

Feel free to PM me with details of your yacht, I am now resigned to a 1 or 2 year search for the ideal Nicholson 38 and hence looking for a smaller yacht to sail in the short-term.
