My friend Ian has just called me to tell me his boat has caught fire. It is down by the Old Windsor Weir. He made it to the bank and got off but it is burning furiously.

First trip out after getting a new Boat Safety certificate too... Ooops!

Now he finds out if Craftinsure are a good insurance...

:(

The fire brigade are having trouble finding him... the Old Windsor lock-keeper (Martin) has gone to help him & liase with the Fire Brigade.

I have informed the EA incident line as I suspect the boat will burn out and may sink (pollution risk).

No gas aboard thankfully.

Boat is twin engined think it may be petrol.

One engine failed followed by fire. As he got nearly to the bank on the remaining engine the engine room auto fire extinguishers went off and killed the remaining engine.

Luckily it still made it to the bank so he got off ok.

Boat a total loss, but owner is ok.

Good thing there was a lock-keeper on duty nearby!!

I hope when the report is written etc its made very clear that the lock keeper's actions were crucial to the arrival of the fire brigade and even if the boat was a loss the crew were safe. Its exactly this sort of scenario that those suggesting keepers are a luxury we can't have cannot answer.

Much sympathy to the owner, what an awful thing to happen.

Perchance after the fire...

Here are the photos of Ian's boat "Perchance" after the fire.

She WAS a Shadow 26 with twin volvos on outboards !!!!!!!!!! yes the E.A. officer dealing with the incident told me about 3 hours after it was reported that I should cancel the d.d. with the bank, as you can understand I had a few more pressing things to do Monday afternoon but when I contacted my bank on the tues lunchtime the E.A. had already canceled the d.d. and made a refund, full credit to the local E.A. officers which is more than I can say for their incident line, I rung them immediatly after calling the fire service to ask for Old Windsor Lock phone number (silly me I forgot to grab the list of phone numbers from the cabin when I abandoned ship) to be told "we cant give that out" but we will get him to ring you, I gave them my number and got them to repeat it back, one hour later no call from the lock so I asked ramage to get the number when I rung Martin at the lock I found out they had passed the message on to ring me (didn't tell him why I needed a call) then gave him a different number !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fire boat attended over two and a half hours after the first call and fire engine ONLY took one and a half hours as they were sent to the wrong bank
