Boat on a launch trailer on a flat bed trailer?

i put a 22ft yacht on a 3500 kg ivor williams trailer and the weight was much to far towards the back of the trailer, I then towed in from poole to grimsby, never again it was the most scary thing i ever did you got serious wag tail over 40 mph and that was with a transit van.

I have a mate with a universal trailer which he will either tow for you or you can hire, the only problem he is based in lincolnshire.

The biggest problem I know of regarding width is the E boat, they had to have a special trailer which tilted the boat to bring it within the width limits. I thought it was 8' but look up the beam of an E boat, it's too big.

I looked at towing with a Transit, they are rated suprisingly low, less than my 406 IIRC, what you really need for serious towing is a Landy or something else rated at 3.5 Te.

What did you tow it with? I thought the max trailer length (excluding drawbar) was 23ft and a width of 7.5ft. That is with a tow vechile under 3500kg (i.e a plg vechile). I'm not saying it isnt possible or safe, but doing 30mph on a motorway with an oversized trailer could make you stick out like a sore thumb!

Trailer

I would be a bit horrified to see the 24 boat on a trailer on a trailer. You say the original trailer is not roadworthy. I would suggest that you would be better off making it roadworthy as a permanent fix to the problem. Float the boat back into the water get the trailer fixed then tow it home.
Weight on the draw bar is critical. It should be in the region of 10% of total mass. More is better provided the towing vehicle is not lifting its front or dropping the back too much. So if you and a mate can together lift the tow hitch by hand then it is too far back and you need more weight on the tow hitch. Then just look at the towing vehicle if it is too far back down then don't drive at night. Fit helper springs or inflatable shock absorbers or load leveler devices. Or move the boat back a bit. good luck olewill

Thanks olewill and all the others. The trailer is OK for a couple of miles to bring the boat home but not for 60 miles over Welsh hills. I never did think it was a good idea and you have confirmed it.

It would be a lovely sail but not last weekend or this  It's lovely in West Wales but they do get some weather. :(
