Re: Boat names - Mine is \"Philae\"

My boat is named "Philae" very unusual and I was going to change it until I looked it up on the net!
The Island of Philae (Pronounced Feel-i) was an ancient egyptian island, it was at the Temple of Philae that the people came to worship the water god isis! thats how it ties in with the water! I quite liked that, so I kept the name.
Just type in my boat name on any search engine and all this come up on your screen!

First sea boat was a very nice Sealine S23.
When asked what I was going to call her I hadnt even thought about it so quick reply was " I DUNNO"
Changed her for the nice new S29 and still couldnt think what to call her so kept the theme goin:
"STILL DUNNO"

Seems to get to some Harbour Masters.
"Lowestoft"
"Lowestoft"
"Lowestoft"
This is motor cruiser "STILL DUNNO"...etc...etc...

I get reply
"Vessel Calling..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyone like to tell me the name of the next one to keep the theme goin?

I remember when Ringo Starr brought out a gizmo of some sort and called it "Another One" when asked why he said it was so that when someone went into a shop to buy "Another One" the shopkeeper would have to ask him "Another one of what" or ask "What happened to the First One?"

First was 'Tico'... came from looking along a bar for a name that was short. (It was a sherry that briefly enjoyed a market presence in the 80's) Wanted something short, simple and difficult to get wrong (bit like kodak)

Then 'Bermuda' after spending a romantic holiday there one Christmas coz we loved the place.

Now 'Sea Dream' after a cruise we spent on a cruise ship of the same name.

Isola Bella , Italian for Beautifull Island, also island on Lago Maggiore near Stresa
and SWMBO's name is Isabelle, both happy... but i usualy forget the last... reason. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Eulimene. We wanted something vaguely classical, Graeco-Roman sort of stuff. Trawled and trawled the web, and eventually came across the Nereids: blue-haired sea nymphs, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris. They often accompany Poseidon and are always friendly and helpful towards sailors fighting perilous storms. They appeared in the retinue of Poseidon accompanied by Tritons and other sea monsters, and riding dolphins, hippokampoi, and other sea animals.

So because she liked the sound of it, Madam chose Halimede, but figured that that would sound rather to like Mayday on VHF.

Next up was Galatea, the most beautiful of the Nereids. Sadly, a quick look at the ITU database revealed about a million 'Galatea's, mostly commercial fishing vessels, so that one was binned.

And the we found Eulimene: the Nereid associated with safe harbours...

Ours was called "Golden Girl" named by our 5 year old son who was learning the letterland alphabet at school. I liked it because it's very phonetic (great over the VHF) and also cos SWMBO is blonde (albeit dyed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif). Other letters of the letterland alphabet are "Poor Peter" (also quite appropriate) and one I quite like "Robber Red".

My fave names are the bond ones, "Octopussy" and "Golden Eye" but these are a bit cliched IMHO.

It was me - which is why we renamed her /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

To make matters worse, superimposed across her name on the transom, though thankfully in smaller letters was "...in the words of the Virgin Mary..." thus combining blasphemy (not that I'm particularly religious) with questionable taste.

The surveyor's report concluded by saying that the boat was in good nick and fit for purpose but begged me, if I bought her, to change the name!
