having just bought a used sailing boat i would like to change it's name ,i hear it is bad luck though to do so.
some boats have many different owners so i presume the names are changed often. does anyone know of the
origins of this?

HWMO has told me that in Ye Olde times the name would be carved into the hull of wooden boats. To change the name it woule have to be gouged out and another name gouged in, thereby weakening the spot and making it more prone to, well, breaking! So: bad luck. I'm sure there are other stories about why it's deemed bad luck, though.

Boats' names change often now. We have our eye on a bigger boat at the mo', and if we buy her will certainly be chaning the name...

And what boat have you bought? Your bio is echoingly empty...

Its very bad luck indeed to change the name of a boat ' change the name and change the luck' as the old saying goes.
There is however a way of getting around this and that is to make a financial donation to Parahandy, Jimi and Claymore Enterprises PLC who will sort everything out for you and you need never worry about it ever again.
If you are the sort who always puts the left sock on before the right one, always has beef on Sundays and who would never go to sea on Friday 13th because to do so is bad luck, don't change the boat name. If however you are not, then call it what you will - everyone else seems to
Good Luck!

Who should I make the cheque out to?

Or do you also take payment in cauliflowers and pies?

Down this way, in, (never let it be said - supersticuous), Cornwall, boat names could only be changed while the boat is out of the water.

When she is back in, Christening is with Lemonade and Saffron buns. This was because most fishermen back in the 19th and early to mid 20th century in this part of Cornwall were either strict Methodists or Brethren.

This is the way new boats were brought into the fishing life. Only rarely did they change names - and only when they were laid-up.

Don't forget to change the SSR listing and the radio licence records and EPIRB records and...........

Do not destroy any documents with the original name. These may (will) be required when you sell her as part of her "heritable trail"
