Errrr ..... GPS antenna rather than VHF.I am clearly in error, since my AIS antenna is shared with the VHF at the masthead. I ought then to be recorded as something like 10 feet.![]()

Sorry, I have misled you! It is on the internet Marine Traffic AIS that I was talking about, my bad. The Simrad just shows black triangles for everything. Can you advise what Simrad display you have? Interesting that this is colour coded when B&G say this can't be done.
Unfortunately on mine none of the input info is user editable. The MMSI can only be entered once but the rest can be edited anytime.
I currently sail out of Plymouth, UK a civil and military port.. As a non commercial vessel there is no requirement to transmit an AIS position.I guess you are not sailing in areas with commercial shipping. AIS is pretty much expected to be used by traffic contacting VTS to cross the entrance of Europort , and a major asset for any Channel crossing. It is also mandatory for all boats to have a transponder in many parts of the world where there is significant commercial traffic (e.g. Singapore).
You can also use the AIS to call up another vessel, either by voice using the vessel name or callsign from the AIS details or automatically using the MFD DSC call functions.
I don't know whether the AIS gets its position from, whether it is internal or from the aerial. Its own case seems too small, but in any case, my chart table is not 10m from the bow as my indicated size suggests. I understand that the set has its own GPS and doesn't use the position from the plotter.Errrr ..... GPS antenna rather than VHF.

AIS transmit is not allowed to use networked gps, ie from plotter etc on NMEA2k. It either has its own built in gps antenna or a dedicated external one.I don't know whether the AIS gets its position from, whether it is internal or from the aerial. I bet it is a default. 33" is 10 metres, a nice round number.I am often curious as to why so many yachts are described as being 33ft, which is actually rather an uncommon size, and I presume that it is one of the default settings.
Come on nice people of B&G, that’s Garmin and Raymarine who manage to colour code their targets rather them being black or slightly blacker![]()
Often has to be done using software on a PC linked to the transponder by USB (or even Serial on older devices)Unfortunately on mine none of the input info is user editable.
I would have suffixed it with Cat ?I prefix my boat name with SY on AIS ..... maybe it should be SC?

We had a thread a few weeks ago where the poster said that all the fields on his AIS unit had to be erased by the manufacturer, unlike mine where it is only the MMSI field which is read-only, although I do know the code to reset even that. What AIS do you have ?
Are there that many boats called "Lady in Red" in this crowd? In the Ship Name field there was sufficient characters for me to enter Lady in Red - Ketch
I did it so I can be picked out in a crowd of Sailing Boats as there aren't normally too many ketches around.
Simrad RS40B combined vhf/AIS transponder. Luckily my local agent is just down the road and I know him quite well so I’ll get the memory wiped when the boat comes out in a couple of weeks. What AIS do you have ?

I thought that it seemed rather unlikely so I checked on line and, apparently, the forumite was quite correct and none of the fields were user editable once entered. It seems to be a very restrictive reading of the AIS regulations.

Just searched and it was also Jamie and the Simrad: TSS have I got this right? What make was that one Richard ?
Most unlikely, but an equal probability of a boat being able to read the name on the transom at half a mile or so but they could probably make out that a boat in the pack was a Ketch. Are there that many boats called "Lady in Red" in this crowd?
