Hi All,

I'm in the process of buying a new (to me) boat and will need to get the boat name changed. Can anyone recommend someone who can design, produce and fit new graphics (whilst removing the old ones first).

Thanks

If you're down Southampton / Hamble way then Grapefruit Graphics have done my boats, and they're very good.

Just make sure you pray for Neptunes forgiveness for changing your boats name if you are in any way superstitious. I didn't and one brand new outdrive later had left me less sceptical than before haha.

Depends what needs to be removed etc

We are circling "funkymonkey" for a new stick on name for ours. Removal of old, sounds to be a hairdryer and scraper job, and application of the new, sounds quite easy from a diy perspective... Haven't tried it yet though..

We have used FunkeyMonkey for our last two boats.

Very easy as long as you pick a warmish day, take your time, and make sure the base is very clean after removing the old name.

I wouldn't use a scraper. Having just replaced the name on the back of my boat we found that a hairdryer made no difference. But it was easy enough to peel the old name off with a finger nail. We were lucky that the old one left no shadowing and it only took a minute to polish and clean the area ready for the new metal name.

Incidentally, I got the SSR number FunkyMonkey and was pleased with the service (I supplied my own Stainless name).

My first boat was a small cabin cruiser for inshore fishing which I bought new so no naming issues. When I traded up I bought a second hand Larson and I was planning to change the name until so many people told me how unlucky it was so I stuck with the old name. This boat was a headache from day 1. Nothing major but a litany of minor issues until I became fed up with the boat and sold it. I bought a Jeanneau, changed the name and have had 7.5 years of almost trouble free boating until I sold it last week. I will definitely be changing the name of the new boat which I'm in the process of buying.

ANother for Funkymonkey.

I used a hairdryer to soften the glue on old before peeling and then had to polish the gelcoat to remove any shadow of the old name. I liked the simplicity of Funkymonkey to create the font and graphics I was after including 2 tone shadow and colour matching. They made it simple. The vinyl is still as good three years on as when bought and I believe I will get many more years before any fade or peeling occurs

when I got Tulana... name was worn.... but being obviously such a quality boat ;) her name was signwritten... this created a bit of an issue.... so measured and photographed, as I wanted the same but in vinyl..

because none of the standard formats worked a call to funky monkey and they sorted an identical copy of the original signwriting..;

If the new boat is going to be at Gosport again, and you have a reasonable idea what you want, BetaPrint in stoke road can make pretty much anything you want for £20 to £30.
Only problem is you’ll need to apply it yourself.
We’ve started using them for all our vans at work and also for my most recent boat. Fitting is easy, and I think results are as good as the pros, well nearly. (They matched the font to make the Guernsey sticker to match the original DIVA sticker)

I would machine polish where you have removed with an aggressive compound and built it back to a shine.

The majority of boats you look at in the right light show the last name in shiny letters!

When i did mine it looked fine. It was actually not that bad, but you could still see it from time to time.

We replaced our transom graphic earlier this year.
After picking off the old using a hair drier, we were left with the outline of the old graphic in a lighter colour where the sun hadn't faded the GRP.
We tried a polisher and the appropriate cutting compound but it didn't really work.
The solution was to use wet and dry and gradually work back to a high grit.
And then polish with the electric mop.
To do it properly, it takes a long time.
Good results though.

And - yes - FunkyMonkey provided the new one - as usual excellent service.
I seem to remember that our font (Vivaldi) was one of Funky Monkey's standards but these days, I have to call/email him to get this font.
No fuss though and he always gets it right.

how weird, just had an email from Funky Monkey (having not dealt with them for a few years), their system has been hacked. Email addresses, names and phone numbers all been taken.. so get ready for some random emails !

Me too. I had the warning email from funkymonkey yesterday, then today received the 'cheap fishing gear' spam from the hackers.
