Hey guys,

I recently bought a new boat, and I am in the process of changing the registration from UK SSR, to Dutch Flag registration.

Currently there are 3 stickers with the boats name (either side 1 and 1 at the back), and 2 stickers with the boats SSR code (either side 1).

My question is, does the boat really need 3 stickers with it's name? Or is 1 enough? I would prefer just the 1 at the back. Does it also need 2 registration stickers, or is 1 enough?

What is a good product to remove the current stickers, and do you know a good website which sells high quality boat lettering?

Thanks so much.

Not sure of Dutch regulations, but in the UK I do not believe there is a specified number. My boat has one name and one SSR.

Remove the lettering with a heat gun or hair dryer. Start far away and only use enough heat to get the letters soft. A credit card makes a good scraper.

I used the above and was very pleased with the result....again use a hairdryer and credit card then wipe over with acetate (evo stick make a good one).

UK SSR legislation states only one name is required (on the stern) along with your local port and SSR number (think they still supply the template when your register, guess other European Countries make be the same!

My understanding with respect to the SSR number is that it must be clearly displayed on both sides of the boat, and therefore you need two. To the best of my knowledge there are no specific rules on displaying the boat name for boats on Part 3 (the SSR), but there are for boats on Part 1 of the British register. This is however rather academic, as I presume the Dutch will have their own rules.

We got our name and SSR number stickers from one of the advertisers in the back of PBO.

It rather depends on where you intend to use your boat. For example, on the River Thames (above Teddington) you need to show the name on both sides of the bow and on the stern and the size of lettering is specified too.

Dutch rules say that if a boat can reach speed higher than 20km/h it needs to be registered. The registration number then needs to be displayed on both sides of the bow in letters minimum 15cm high, 10cm wide, 2cm thick. If boat cannot reach 20km/h and is shorter than 20 meters then this doesn't apply.
