Hi there,
Does anyone know the current boating laws in spain?
Our local boat chandlery in spain says the law (that a license is required for anything over 4m and 13.5hp) has relaxed and as long as it’s not over 6m or overpowered, no license is required.
However all web research that I’ve done doesn’t corroborate this claim?
Does anyone have any first hand experience of this?

thanks

AFAIK all powered water craft, down to PWC, including sailing boats, need some form of licence registration. That’s is , boat registration. Person in charge of it also needs a differing qualification according to size/power/type. Boats are subject to inspection , to check safety gear on board primary. This is obviously Spanish boats, Spanish Sailors. Not UK.

If your boat is UK registered there are no requirements, although it is sensible to have an ICC covering under 10m for powerboats which would also be acceptable for Spanish registered boats.

If it is a UK boat and you want to keep it in a marina, you'll need SSR or Pt 1 plus proof of insurance in Spanish.
As Tranona says, an ICC appropriate for the type would be sensible.

The highest that you can do in English is a PNB which is a simple one day course.

For a variety of reasons, I’m looking at a Spanish flagged boat, not UK.

That’s brilliant, exactly what I was after.
Many thanks Windy
