I was thinking about going to the Solent Boat Jumble at Netley this coming Sunday to try to sell a car load of clutter, such as tatty fenders, surplus lengths of rope and electronic bits and bobs from various projects.

I just looked on the website and its £20 for a pitch if paid in advance, £25 on the day which struck me as a bit steep ! Add on another tenner for fuel, coffees etc and its not worthwhile.

We have occasional small car boot sales around Lymington, such as for the RNLI, but they never get enough punters to buy much.

What we need is a mega-boaty-car boot sale is required in the spring??

There is one in Canford arena just outside Poole every spring (assuming the pikeys don't camp on the land as they did this year). Don't know if it is any good as seem to be able to accumulate junk without going looking for it!

I think boat jumbles can be a bit hit or miss. I went to one with a boot full of what I called junk and made £300. This was mainly down to a young lad who turned up with an empty car and a wallet full of cash, went round all the stall holders early on, bought a load of stuff and then sold it all at a big profit when the buyers turned up! But the likes of him won't be at every boat jumble.

That'll be Beaulieu boat jumble then, and in May, which I think is still Spring !

The reason they don't get many punters is due to not having a sufficient advertising campaign. Need to charge a reasonable pitch fee to pay for the ads etc.

I don't go to boat jumbles any more as I don't want to fund thieves !

A shame as there are obviously decent people there, but unless you wear a hat with a flashing light saying ' I'm MoodyNick from Scuttlebutt ' how can I know the stuff isn't from the mooring next to mine ?

Im afraid Ebay has killed off the boat jumbles. I have in the past rented pitches at boat jumbles but as you say after forking out on a pitch (which was £35 last time i took out one) fuel dinner and time ebay is far more favourable. I still attend boat jumbles for a social day out but they certainly aint what they used to be.
As for the thieves at boat jumbles i would say 99.9% are fellow boating enthusiasts who just want to offload surplus equipment. Why pay £35 for a pitch when you can offload all of your hooky gear for a £5 pitch on a local car boot sale.

Maybe, because the Lymington RNLI ones are full of everything 'but' boaty items.
few bits of old rope + 99% kitchenalia/toys/plants/ladies clothes/anyoldrubbish.

The Police turned up at the pitch next to mine at the last Northern Boat Jumble. Someone had spotted their outboard, they were questioned and the engine returned to its owner. I noticed the Police took no interest in all the other engines which I thought strange.

I noticed a guy at that jumble selling a load of cheap outboards out the back of a transit van which i thought was strange?? Same guy?

I'm not sure what's strange about selling cheap outboards, everyone is selling cheap stuff at boat jumbles, I can guarantee that my stuff isn't stolen though. However their excuse that the engine was left there by another stall-holder was a bit lame.

I went to a boat jumble in Paisley last year and did not find much except overpriced junk and dodgy looking stall holders. Eventually bought a new float switch for £7, handed over a £20 note when somebody barged right in front of me to ask the seller a question, gave the guy such a glare as I was not amused. I then had to remind the seller that he had change to give me of which he denied until another customer vouched for me. I hear the boat jumble is back on in Irvine on the 5th October, so looking forward to that.

I didnt mean my reply to cause offence if you were the chap in the transit van, and yes your correct that was a lame excuse
