We thought we had a bargain, infact I'm sure it must be a bargain - trouble is we don't know what to do with it!

Bought a Sterling Marine Power 'alternator power booster unit' at the BBJ last weekend. 'Im indoors thought it did something with the batteries to regulate the charging. Our problem now is that we don't know what/how it does what it does & neither does the bloke who's going to re-wire our beloved on Sat.

Any ideas?

I have a Sterling Marine Alternator Booster. If it is the same one as mine I could copy the instructions and wiring etc for you. Alternatively, Sterling are based in Worcester and are very helpful. I would give you the telephone number now but all the instructions/manuals are in the file on the boat. Send me a PM if you are still stuck.

Hi Windfall

You can download the fitting instructions from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.sterling-power.com/html/downloads.htm>http://www.sterling-power.com/html/downloads.htm</A>. I also have one of these waiting patiently for it's turn to reach the top of the 'To Do' list. I lost the original instructions so downloaded a copy.

Tom

You need to connect a wire directly to the field coil via one of the brushes which means dismantling the alternator. This may be beyond the DIY skills of some, in which case it's best left to a professional. Lucas alternators are quite simple to dismantle, but care is needed to make the connection without shorting or damaging the unit.

Well I managed it a few months back, took the regulator off, but don't do as I did and put too much heat above the brushes, this unsoldered one of them and I then spent hours trying to re-solder it. Doh!!

Apart from that it was relatively easy, just fiddly. As one of the worlds worst DIYers I would say not too difficult a job.
