Boat Insurance

What is it about Saga small print that puts you off? I've been with Saga two years, had one smallish claim settled recently - no probs. However my experience of marine insurance companies is limited: I'm due to re-insure in May and would rather avoid any 'hidden' potholes.

Discount is 25%. Actual figures Gross premium £495 Discount £123.75, Tax £18.50, Documentation £15, Legal £15

Sorry, jumped to conclusions about the way you were working it out! Mind was on no claims discount rather than %age insured value. Richard is probably still paying too much! Agree about Saga though.

I'm with Saga and am definitely covered for singlehanding and I believe the deck gear is included, though not 100% sure about the latter 'cos policy is elsewhere.
They also increased my cruising area for no extra charge.

Correct.

I made a decision to go with Pantaenius for about £150 more than the cheapest quote I got in 2007.... having read the small print of lots of policies, they definitely offer better cover than most others. Bishop Skinner were over £1k at the time, GJW were competitive and IIRC, Robin Knox and St. Margarets were £100/£150 cheaper.

I insured ours 2 years ago now almost with GJW and nether of us had any qualifications. Since, we are both, day skipper shore and practical, coastal skippers, comp crew, vhf licenses etc. But our premium has not changed! So, i guess yes and no is the answer. No for us, yes for many others......welcome to the forum amanda, you will find this an invaluable place of knowledge. ........

In 2006 I insured with 30 years experience but no qualifications - £980, no endorsements

In 2007, I insured with 30 years experience but no qualifications and 1 years No Claims Bonus - £980, no endorsements

My renewal has just arrived - 30 years experience, Yachtmaster, 2 years No Claims - you guessed it - £980, no endorsements /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not funny really

not funny really since you are now insuring with <span style="color:red">33 </span> years experience /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Checked through my Saga policy and (fixed) deck gear is certainly covered, as is the outboard - providing it's anti-theft locked, and the tender - providing it is permanently marked with the boat's name.

No mention of no of Crew O/B, but unlike you I'm not up to single handing yet: although I remember SAGA verbally querying how many would be O/B for crossing Biscay. Whisper seems to have single handed sorted tho.

But from what Tranona says, I'll be giving Bishop Skinner a call to quote as well as Saga. I'm currently paying £536 for Saga (sum insured is £80K) - covering European coastal waters and the Med up to 30 deg E. Although I guess my relative inexperience probably counts against me in terms of getting the best deal.

I remember trying Saga and they were inflexible re when the boat had to be decommissioned for winter. I believe they had insisted that it had to be out of the water, or at least brought into a marina from its swinging mooring by November 1st, and there was no leeway. Bishop Skinner are always happy to adjust for individual circumstances, sometimes for no extra fees.
