Is this normally covered by the car insurance or by the boat insurance? (I guess checking my policy would help but I've not got the boat insurance yet).

IIRC, Third Party damage caused by trailer and/or contents will normally be covered under car insurance, but damage to trailer and boat will not. However, policies vary, so make sure that you know what is covered by your specific policies for car and boat, and particularly that your boat policy covers damage to trailer and boat whilst being towed on the road.

Car Insurance will very rarely cover the value of the trailer or its load, except where 3rd Party mandatory cover is required. It most definitely does not cover the trailer or load whilst detached from the car, so if you lose it on the slip after you unhook it, you are on your own. Equally if the outfit gets stolen its not covered in any way by car insurance, even if it is unhooked from the car and towed away e.g. in an Mway service area. (It happens!)

Most marine insurance policies will include towing risks, by agreement.

Id agree with the other posts. If you look at your boat policy, thats where all the stringent rules about locks, security etc are stated for boat/trailer.
Still, always worth a call to your insurer.

On my insurance for my boat and jetski (both mardon) they are both covered for towing. But they way it works is if the boat or jetski hit another car then the damage to the other car is paid for by the car insurance and my boat/jetski insurance covers the damage on the trailer or Boat/jetski.

So you have to tell your car insurance company you tow. And in my case I tow with a company car so I have to remind our accountant every year I tow.
