Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Sad question I'm afraid, but...

I am curious about your Anchor Cam, the bog standard Garmin camera's would be a liability if mounted towards the bow as I would imagine it to be, do you have a pic of how the camera is mounted. No reason other than curiosity.

I can imagine John, that you are in 7th Heaven at the moment and are enjoying every second spent on Match. The pics look fabulous, much better also under the Med sun, she looks stunning!!!

Mike it is just mounted on the hull side, a good metre or so to starboard of the anchor so giving a nice side-on view. See pic below. Now that you know where it is, you can also see it on the 8th pic in my post #1898 above. I thought about a fancy bracket but then decided there is no need, and the way it is mounted looks very neat. You might think it is susceptible to being knocked, but actually it isn't. That part of the boat never goes near anything hard. Ultimately if it does get hit then it's £200 or so, so worth the risk. It works perfectly at night in pitch dark and the glass is water repellent so spray isn't a problem. I'll post a vid next week but I'm really very very pleased with this idea. It works perfectly and there is nothing I would change having tried the thing out for real. Check out the vid next week

How many seconds was that for an answer with a pic ;)

I would imagine that would work really well, no guesswork involved and a perfect solution. I had imagined it would need to be further back, I had obviously underestimated the scale on a boat of this size.

Thanks for the response, unfortunately this kind of thing fascinates me, you are very kind to humour me :)

Mike.

I'm afraid I admit to being a geek as much as you or anyone else :D. When we all get ancient we can open our own rest home and all go and live there and just talk about boats :D :D

Actually you say "no guesswork". Well, I bought a Garmin camera, plus a mini 12v battery and a little 6inch colour TV screen off ebay for £35 or so, and took all that to Soton boat show 2012. I set it up on the display sq78 with duct tape, to find by trial/error where the camera should be positioned to get the exactly correct field of view. Then I sent the mounting dimensions to Fairline. Sad or what!?!?!

I'm really pleased with the outcome though, as the vid will illustrate. This was all Hurricane's idea, on the previous s78 build thread iirc.

I don't see a problem there, simply because it involves holes drilled through the hull. Imagine if it wasn't exactly right on 'YOUR' boat, you would probably have to just live with it. Fairline may have been sick of the sight of you but things like this do matter when the finished article just has to be well beyond perfection.

So no, not sad at all, the extra mile when planning definitely shows when you see the end result. The guess work I referred to was more to do with retrieving the anchor than the design of the camera.

And yes, my jealousy might show in abundance, but I can still dream can't I. ;)

Mike.

Sorry for late reply

Glad to see she made it "Home" safe, now its time for you to enjoy the fruits of your labours.

Thanks for an interesting and inspiring thread

JFM kept my powder dry until now just enjoying this epic thread. A very very big thanks in taking the time and effort to share your vision and ultimate result with the masses it has been a magnificent journey. After so long without a boat you truly deserve to now enjoy the spoils of all that planning and effort. Look forward to any vids without interrupting you peace and quiet and enjoyment aboard Match.

Regards Ron

Not a lot I can say that's original and others haven't already said J, so all I'll say is a BIG thank you for posting these two excellent threads and involving everyone in your thought and decision makings processes from the start. Been fascinating.

One point worth mentioning, someone earlier said words to the effect that he bets Fairline are glad to see the back of you and your interfering in their boatbuilding. Well a couple of acquaintances of mine work at Fairline on the production line and were telling us how much they enjoyed your fresh new ideas and how some of them ribbed "the office chaps" about their lack of ideas and that they need that jfm chappie there to keep the office wallahs on their toes.

Apparently there's a sweepstake running as to when M3 starts.

On the "M3-note"...:

JFM, is there something you feel now that "ooo, wouldn't it have been nice if I had...."?

I recall you hade a deal with FL over the amount of customization hours and maybe your wish list was longer than what was included in those hours?

I also want to express my gratitude towards you for taking the time and including the forum in your projects. These insights into (custom) boatbuildning would be hard to get in other ways and this has been such a nice experience. Thanks a lot and happy sailing with your wonderful boat!

(of course we are looking forward to the coming cruising reports with lots of pictures... I am also a bit curios, I recall your TV mounting in the master cabin getting some attention a number of pages back - may I humbly ask for a picture of the finished article...? :) )

Well even though I mostly use sails it was a pleasure to follow the thread and JFM's superb attention to detail, which shows in the final result.

I remember when I had my last boat built I reckon I must have spent a tenth of the effort before my head started spinning from all the choices etc. From my brief look around Match 2 there must have been plenty of things going into her that didn't even get a mention here.

Enjoy!

Anchor Camera

As promised here is a geeky vid of the anchor camera. This needs no explanation - the vid shows the whole thing. I'm really really pleased with this idea as it pretty much automates the whole anchoring thing. Without the camera you have no chance of seeing the anchor from either helm because it retracts into a slot in the stem rather than coming onto the foredeck. It works in pitch dark too, because the garmin cam emits infra red and the chain is so shiny. Intellectual property in this idea belongs to Hurricane who suggested it a couple of years ago.

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. I'll post some cruising pictures on different threads during the summer

Erik, it sounds very smug, I apologise, but truthfully the boat feels perfect, to my very subjective yardstick of course. With Match1, early on I saw improvement I needed but on M2 I honestly cannot think of anything, even minor, that I would change if for some reason I commissioned another s78. Many hours of thought went into it and everything I wanted to change has been done. Some of the mods like all-new black tank system are a big deal. The things Fairline didn't due due to hours limits were simple and have all been done since delivery (some lighting details, for which Fairline did the pre-wiring, etc). I'm loving the Garmin 8000 glass bridge gear as well

Fairline have generally been fantastic and the boat is creak-free and beautifully screwed together. It had almost zero snags, and the few tiny things were pretty much fixed by Fairline or Essex Boatyards within a week. Fantastic service from both firms. Looking back now, if I had my time over again, I would buy the boat from them and not change a thing.

I'll reply re the TV in a mo...

Haha, it was a nice project and there were difficult challenges but everyone got along fine really. In my very subjective book, everything I asked them to change on the boat was a real improvement and for the most part I think they saw that. Extra windows, proper laundry, much-needed 2nd staircase, a smell-free black tank system, sexy dash and white caulk, cleats where you need them, beautiful lighting, etc, are all good things to have. The Fairline team - management etc, design/engineering, and the skilled guys who actually make the thing, are all a very nice group to deal with. I'd like to have a couple of years boating though before doing this again :D :D

Erik a few stills of the cabins are pasted in below including close ups of the TV. The TV was one of the mods I did after delivery. Fairline supplied me 45x45 raw wenge lengths; I made the wenge "picture frame" around the TV, complete with little indents for the Samsung badges etc, and then Fairline lacquered it. Then I installed it and the TV. Fairline pre wired it during the build. The TV is a 30mm thick Samsung smart TV, 40inch HD, connected to Harman Kardon sound incl subwoofer. The TV swing bracket is custom made from laser cut s/s - basically it is a big hinge. The catalogue TV mechanisms were either too flimsy or ate up too much thickness - I wanted the entire hinge unit to be only 15mm thick yet VERY stiff, so it had to be custom made, mostly from 6mm plate then painted black. The actuator is a 24v lead-screw type linear actuator, a catalogue item, switched by a RF remote. The plotter is Garmin's smallest in the new 8000 series, the 8 inch, fully networked so I have anchor alarm, ability to flick the radar on at night, etc. The Garmin is also connected to the HDMI-in on the TV.
