Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

The bladon gas turbine is v interesting. I emailed them earlier in the week based on rec from Sarabande. Their unit is as small as a diesel genset and can do 10-20kva, though it seems to be vertical rather than horiz, I mean a tall fridge freezer shape/size, which makes it hard to fit. 25m boats need horizontal shape for gensets at the sides of engine rooms. Very interesting product though...

I'll post some more pics this evening. I was at factory this morning. Boat is nearly finished and I'm really pleased with it. Lorry to take it to seaside for launching is booked in about 3 weeks time. (Time flies!)

Its no good JFM, you're an addict by now, the withdrawal symptoms will have you planning Match III before the year is out.......

Gotta admit John that "owning your own gas turbine" has surely gotta be on a bloke's bucket list :). I thought that would involve a few years hard labour saving up for a Lycoming or Pratt+Whitney, but one of these Bladon jets in Match 3 would tick the box. Think of the high pitched sweeshing noise if you had the right exhaust nozzle

yes, ducted through the flybridge arch via swivelling nozzles (Harrier style) you could fry incoming gulls and seriously discommode intruding quadcopters. :)

Was "parked" in the M25 roadworks yesterday and pondering the very same " we want more pictures" question !!!!............ as JFM says its nearly "job done" so i think I will stick my fat head over the wall and say,......................... the order for MATCH III will be signed at LIBS !!!!!!!!!!.............(WITH A GAS TURBINE)!!!!!!!!!...............any offers ?

Don't think you'd get decent odds against that, it's a no brainer. Only thing that might affect it is if he signs at SIBS

Think jfm's got shares in F/L and is in charge of their R&D dept :D

Some of the design issues in relation to propulsion and power generation (noise, weight, reliability, single fuel policy, ease of control and availability) which have been raised in recent posts are being addressed by Bladon Jets.

This UK, Coventry-based, company is at the forefront of micro-turbines in the UK, with plants from 5 to 100 KW. A principal use is foreseen in the car/truck industry with hybrid drive trains. The technology is several steps forward from the Rover Gas turbine of a generation ago, and shows such promise that Bladon are in receipt of serious industrial funding from Tata Steel, and Jaguar Cars, as well as seeking Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) funds from venture and private capital.

Bladon is also receiving research support from the UK Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

The development of powertrains which are smaller and lighter than even the best of today's diesels, coupled with the ability to act as drivers for modern electrical generators, raises the possibility of hybrid power for use on boats, where the same unit could produce power for both electric propulsion and on-board power.

Their website is here:-

http://www.bladonjets.com/

Their 15KvA (12KW) turbine unit shows the benefits of this new breed of generator.

It has a small footprint the size of a domestic fridge/freezer; there is complete absence of vibration when operating, and it has whisper levels of sound when operating. The equivalent diesel generator would take up roughly four times the volume, weigh ten times as much, and produce a significant amount of both noise and vibration.

Hi Sara - very interesting stuff! I did six weeks of work experience at Rolls Royce when 18 and trying to figure out what to do with my life.

One of the projects I was exposed to (I say exposed, as I was barely instrumental to the project) was a fast cargo vessel which was 250m LOA and 50m beam.
It boasted 5x 50,000HP Gas Turbines and five kamewa Water Jets (RR had recently purchased kamewa) which were 2.4m in diameter. Long tall and short of it, the project didn't go ahead. However, more water was to be propelled out of the back of the vessel than flows over Niagara falls, they couldn't go flat out in the English channel due to constraints on depth (not hitting the bottom, but some effect which I have forgotten) and the biggest concern was sucking up a whale..
Another project was for LNG carriers.

However, this are all rather large projects. One which us day-to-day boaters to use is something along the lines of this.. http://www.asciimation.co.nz/beer/

But if the main reason for not running the a/c at night is purely because of the noise it makes, surely it'd make more sense to solve the noise problem or am I missing something here?

Worst case is pop a genny in the dinghy and stream it behind the boat and have a long cable plugged into the boat? Of course other boats morred in the same achorage may get a bit pi888ed off of your dinghy with noisey genny bouncing off them but hey ho tough on them eh? :D

Many years ago I raced karts and we were up at Cadwell park in our 1964 Bedford Duple converted coach. One of the posher teams had a generator going presumably to cool beer as they were having a bit of a party. We weren't invited and our party had finished (presumably because of the lack of cool beer) and getting to sleep was proving to be a bit of a problem as the posh lot had positioned their (noisy) generator as far away from their coach as the extansion lead would reach - this meant it was right by us.

We decided that it was too noisy so we turned it off - about a minute later it started again, so we turned it off again - this wasn't enough of a hint so we decided to make it difficult to start again and we achieved this by "shortening" the fuel line, after many attempts to restart the troublesome machine they gave up and went to bed - how they didn't realise it was us I'll never know as the coach was shaking with mirth at their drunken attempts were met with repeated failure!

I'm sure the reason being jfm travelling in the US (as per another thread), but I still would like to express some slight anticipation for more info - if memory serves me right there was a factory visit and some pictures taken already last Friday...? ;)

(thanks in advance!)

Yup I have a stack of pics erik from last week. Unfortunately photobucket has just disabled the facility where you can tick say 20 picture vthumbnails and generate the bbcode (the [IMG} stuff) for all 20 in one click. You now have to do them one by one. It takes ages to make a long picture post now. Really annoying. None of the other picture sites (flickr, imageshack, smugmug) offers this either, as far as i know

If anyone knows a picture hosting site that offers this functionality please tell me which one

Hey guys JFM has to work sometimes to pay for his boat like everyone else  - Hence why he is not responding @ the moment - I am sure he will be along soon when he has time to post.

Personally I don't know how this guy manages to do all he does for us all on the forum as well as work 24/7 - JFM is not Superman or is he :)

Yep - I thought the changes were a backward step as well.
Still investigating to see if Photobucket can do it a quicker way

+1 loads I want to post can't be arsed to do it 1 by 1. Do press contact me on photobucket they need loads of moans.

i have a bodgy solution.
Go to you name and drop down the menu
Go to user setting
Go to album
Select easy link mode on and disable everything except IMG and you get the look below.
With a split screen you can quickly cut and past them into your reply

Hurricane, you're smarter than me on this computer stuff so if you discover anything please advise. I have examined flickr, imageshack and smugmug and they dont have this "multi image bbcode generation" feature

Ellesar I don't think they're listening. If you google it you see there must be a million forum posts in the US from people yelling about this. P'bucket's management seem to think they've got it right. While I had opted out of the new site and remained with the old, their software asked why and I told them about this proeblem, but they have seem to be ignoring it

I agree with you that it's a major pain to do 1 by 1. I have 40 pics of boatbuild project to post (it's nearly finished ; lorry is booked to take it from factory to sea 2 weeks this Thursday 11/4/13)

Ah thanks, that's really helpful. As tou say it's bodgy, but it might just be tolerable. I'll give it a go tonight. Cheers Ellesar

ie wont let you have 2 copies up and do a split screen - so I've discovered sticky notes.

But.........

If you have all your photos in 1 album as I do, photobucket grinds to a halt and crashes internet explorer. I will try on firefox at home later.

I hate the IT industry. Cocking around creating problems where none existed.

There is a product I've stumbled across - it seems to be badged under various names.
The free version is M8 Free Clipboard
You can get it at CNET - here http://download.cnet.com/M8-Free-Clipboard/3000-2384_4-10267618.html
I've had a quick go but it seems to me that you can then bulk upload your pics to Photobucket as usual
Then do as Mark says above but as you click the IMG CODE to get the link, M8 will pop the links into its Clipboard Manager.
In M8, under Tools - General - Set the Paste Mode to Indirect
Open up your YBW "Post Reply" or "New Post" edit window
Then Select all your links in the M8 Clipboard Manager
Right click and click "Bulk Paste to Document"
M8 will then paste all your pics - one at a time - putting a gap between them

Alternatively, you can Ctrl Click in the M8 Manager and the link will paste into where you left the cursor in the YBW forum editor.

I've only just found M8 so there may be a better way but this seems to work reasonably well - slight improvement on Mark's suggestion.

The link above to M8 is for the free version which limits the number of links to 25 but you could buy the full version - maybe
