Now is not the time to try and buy a secondhand Eberspacher.
Last summer when my old Ardic finally died of some smoke related disease, managed to buy a replacement ex BT Eberspacher D2 with a few bits off Ebay for £125.00 pounds,at the moment the blimming things have rocketed to over £400.00.
Need to find one for my new heat-less boat.We are all doomed.:(

Just need to hang on a few months. Fred - they'll be cheap around June, July, August time when nobody wants one ! :D

Anyways, you're not alone in the heating problems arena. The Webasto Airtop 2000D on my 'new' (now BSS certificated) boat is US despite the survey claiming it was in good working order. It has been removed and sent for investigation which will no doubt result in yet another ginormous estimate/expenditure if it is to be returned to useful service.

I'm actually coming round to thinking that shore leccy may have its economical advantages when it comes down to winter days in the marina - a 2Kw fan heater in the local ironmongers store was a mere £25.

I've got a couple of those from when my heating packed up last winter; quite good actually, but you need sunglasses, they give off a hell of a lot of light as well as heat!

I've also got an eber in my garage that i bought on ebay for my previous boat if anyone wants to make a sensible offer...

There is an ad in this months MBM for a Heater thingy that runs like a Eber on Gas but can also be run from the mains as a heater as well when on shorepower.

Seemed like a nice solution, mind you no price in the ad...

Two Makes. Propex and Trumatic ......both retail for around £500 pounds if you do a a bit of a websearch.. !

I have owned two caravans in a previous life and one one occasion when working for the Civil Service, I lived in one for three years (during the week through summers and very cold snowy winters)!

In both caravans, I fitted a 'wall-mounted' gas heater which was not only cheap, but extremely efficient. The only draw back I can see is that the caravan units 'vented' through the floor to the underside of the caravan.

Now I am sure this can be remedied to suit a yacht or motorboat, using suitable pipework and an inventive mind?

We are talkin 5½-kWatt heater for just over a hundred wonga!! That is serious heat on a boat. :D

See here:

This solution is far, far cheaper that any similar 5-kWatt heater from a chandlery or other yacht supplier?

.

A real can of cold worms.

Have looked at all the available methods in some depth but blown warm air( gas or deisel) is the most suitable for MoBos.
The difficult bit is understanding why a 2kw heater with a bit of a ducting/exhaust kit and skin fitting will cost £500 pounds for a Propex but the thick end of £1000 for a Eberspacher or Webasto, even if you buy from Turkey. The diesel unit does not include the wotsit which goes into your fuel tank. The only sensible extra cost on the gas system would be a gas detector of some sort. The other advantage of gas is no third lot of piping and no complicated and current consuming ignition system(anything less than 12v and no heat) and fancy control electronics which admittedly will tell you exactly why you are freezing your bits off when the man in the white coat calls with his canbus reader asks if you have a limit on your credit card.!

Yes - but at £19.99!! CPC are doing them for £11.99. It pays to shop around!

The only serious trouble with a unit like that is the fact it is radiant heat and if it fell over due to wash from a passing boat or a bit of swell, your boat would be full of smoke at best or on fire at worse!
Most unlikely. All such devices, by law in the UK, have to have an auto cut-off device if tipped over. The CPC one certainly does and it looks identical to the Maplins one.

There is a gas equivalent warm air heater 4kw , the whole kit new i think is in the region of £450, and is quite suitable. I was considering this instead of my electric heaters, but for me i think i am going for the 5kw diesel water heater, this way i can connect to my cylinder which can be disconnected from the engine, there are also a very good range of matrix heaters . Therefore it will be a complete cental htg system
