The Norwegian lifeboat association ("Redningsselskapet") has released some of their pictures of stranded boats in an attempt to reduce accidents. Many are alcohol related and chart-plotter navigation errors.

Is it me or was there a disproportionate number of motorboats up on the rocks?
Said my OH, that one deserves to be parked there when a particularly ugly one appeared. Can any one guess which photo?

Heres a Raggi for you.

Nice to see that Lifeboats are on the side of the raggies.

Well it cant be true that a fair and random selection of "prat related" incidents would produce a 20 to 1 ratio of Mobo's to raggies..can it?
Therefore the only logical explaination is that the collection was compiled with some predjudice... ( I doubt that)
perhaps there is a third option?

One possibility, judging by views of marinas etc when flying into northern Scandinavia is that there are simply many more motorboats than sailing boats. Will have to have a search for some numbers unless anyone knows?

There are a lot more motor boats; I would guess 3 or 4 times as many. The sail boat in the pictures had an engine failure and a lee shore... I guess sail boat groundings often damage the hull and keel but don't leave the boat stranded.

Number 15 and 16 looked the most painfull. The Fairline 58 was in the owners hands for one day before he ran it aground, crew were rescued but boat sank to bottom, as Homer Simpson would say, DOH!

At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious the mobos will probably have been travelling at least 2 to 3 times the speed of a yot. The net result of navving error being a grounding or sinking vs a 'bloody hell we're a bit close to that rock, reverse'

It looks like, in pic 2, that the guy failed, if he had been going a little faster he might just of been able to park right next to his 'house'!
