Ok I have my little fletcher 14 advertised in the classified section of a well know boating magazine.

Today I received a call which I am not entirely sure how to take.

A chap called me from Solihul with a very strong Irish accent he immediately told me he knew nothing about boats but liked the look of mine from the pic. He then went on to say (stay with me on this) he owns a driving range with a lake and needs something to collect the balls in.

Being an honest chap I told him that this perhaps was not the right craft and a dory or small flat bottomed boat would do the trick but he was insistent.

He then started talking pound notes and asking directions to Teddington (where the boat is) saying he wants to view it this week.

So wind up or genuine?

These Irish scams work in exactly the same way as the Nigerian scams except instead of taking your money, they pay up in perfectly legal cash, usually paying a few quid more than what you asked for in the first place. Having dumped their money on you, they leave you with the item they had agreed to purchase. Unfortunately they then become untraceable leaving you to dispose of your asset a second time.

Cheers, Brian.

Ahh that's what I did not tell him it's locked in a garage at the end of a drive and the neighbours are having an extention and have blocked the drive with building kit. The only way out is with a crane untill it's all moved !

Well that sounds a good deal, he gives you cash, and you keep the boat???

Sign me up! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In fact, thinking about it isnt this the same scam the MP's have got running.... we give them cash, they keep the house/ furniture whatever.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

find out where his golf range is and make a few enquiries if your unhappy about his bons fides, but I would not judge him purely on his accent. I sold a pair of Ford 150's to a chap in Ireland on the strenght of a video tape, he sent the money and transport, no bother at all at all.

Not worried about his accent but the only wind ups I have ever had have been from people with heavy accents, as you say the Irish are usually good as gold and keep their word, well the ones I have had dealings with anyhow

Yer Photodog I was trying to work out how thats a scam, sounds fine to me.
I'll ask him to pay the £200k for my Princess then keep it.

have you got that right flobbergob?

If he was a well spoken Englishman from Gosport and he wanted it to go out to his floating duck house in his pond, would you still take the money?

knowing that it was tax payers dosh?

of course you would. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If he calls again and does sound genuine, ask him how much he would pay someone to do the job of ball collector!

....Quite fancy the idea of being paid to speed round a lake and at the end of each day inform your Irish boss that yet again the balls managed to sink before being caught!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi, we do have a driving range at Meriden, between Solihull and Coventry where the balls are hit into a lake. you never know it could just be true, much more fun in a Fletcher than a Dory even just picking the balls up should be entertaining at 30 knots. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
