Just caught on the late news that a "speedboat" exploded today just off the beach on Hayling Island - looks like one or more jerrycans exploded from the remains held up as evidence, the can certainly looked to have exploded from within but that doesn't mean to say it was the first item to catch fire/explode. All 6 occupants smartly abandoned ship (3 to port and 3 to starboard going by the words of one of them!) and seemed uninjured. From the pictures you could tell it had a sterndrive but the rest of the boat forward of the transom was a mass of flame and smoke.

Interesting technique used by the Hayling Island lifeboat, they made two close runs past the burning vessel executing a smart turn away each time, each run sprayed wash over the boat such that on the second run it sank stern first.

Can't find anything about it on the news sites so far though....

The writer in that link suggests it was a pity because (something like) "the boys had just bought it for £3,000 and didn't have any insurance".

I would regard that as some sort of blessing, people driving cars, boats or anything without insurance are best kept away from me (please).

Thanks for that, I'm afraid your post title hadn't grabbed my attention.

Was coming into Chichester on Saturday and saw the fireball. With all the rescue boats, helicopter and fire-engines thought it was a light plane crash - but as we got closer we could see the bow sticking out of the water. Very lucky no one got hurt.
