Hi all

Earlier this year I inherited an old 27 foot cruiser moored on the Thames.
It is in need of external and internal TLC, but is, or rather was, functional.

I planned to use it this year, do it up a bit over winter, and sell it in spring. I was already shocked at how much it was costing me when the outdrive broke.

Repairing it is going to be very expensive and I can't afford to do it and pay for the winter mooring and other repairs.

I am hesitant to put the boat on the market because it's the wrong time of year and I don't think anyone's going to want it now it's broken down. I am trying to get rid of the expense of keeping it, and having it for sale for months won't do that. But if the price is low enough I guess someone might come along. Any opinions?

I've also considered scrapping it or giving it away. I have no idea how you scrap a boat. Are there boatyards on the Thames which would do this? It's got a fair amount that would be salvegeable, especially the engine. As for giving it away, are there any organisations or people that want non-functioning old boats?

What shall I do? Any ideas welcome.

Why not join a boat club that has a thriving D I Y section, repairs can be very cheap, possibly find a sharer for the boat at the same time. Some clubs have a lot of facilities for maintenance work.

Not Hurlingham Yacht Club I hope!!! ;)

I was in a similar situation, to be honest if you simply join a club to "use" their facilities they won't be very pleased - also think about how much time/money you should spend and IMHO selling it and perhaps saving for something a bit tidy worth considering.

Disposing a boat is as hard as selling it; maybe even more. I had the same problem and even started a thread here:

Why not Hurlingham Yacht club, it is a d i y club, run by the members, some people don't fit in, others do. It could solve problems.

There are always people looking for a project. No matter what it is, if the price is right, it will sell. I'd be inclined to stick it on eBay and see what happens - you might be pleasantly surprised.

Hi have read about your plight, I am an engineer on the thames based near Winsor. I would be interested in perhaps swopping some work for a share in the boat. Perhaps we could speak if this is of interest to you.

Hi all

I was encouraged to hear from these replies that you thought there would be interest in my boat, so advertised it locally, and found a buyer within a couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice and offers of help.
