The owner of a Beneteau 50 wants me to help him sail his boat from La Rochelle to Athens. Him and me. Two weeks. How much can I ask?

Whatever you think you are worth and he is prepared to pay. If he is the skipper and you the crew then probably £100 a day is reasonable plus food and flights. More if you are taking responsibility as skipper. Hard work to do that in 2 weeks with just 2 crew.

Thank you. I see it as an adventure. But I also see it as a chance to get the funds to buy a windvane for my own boat. I too thought that it is hard work with two people in two weeks.

You are right. I just repeated what the owner told me on the phone. More like three weeks probably.

Seeing that map it would be a great trip. I hope the owner goes through with it. I just think he doesn’t have a lot of experience. His first idea was to put the boat on a truck, transport it to the South of France and start from there. He asked me if it was possible to sail the boat around Gibraltar. It’s a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 50 so I said I thought it was possible. He said he was a sailor though. Let’s see if he calls again. My idea was to ask 5000 Euro.

Two weeks is really pushing it. It's around 2500 nm so 18 days if you average 6 knots (which is generous) and don't stop for fuel or provisions, nothing breaks and the weather is kind.

Realistically you'd stop somewhere around Gib and probably in Malta. Three weeks is a fair assessment if things go well.

2-up so 4/4 watches probably. I enjoy this kind of passagemaking but it is tiring even in your 20's

How much? I would suggest 3000 euros as mates rates IF you are not the skipper but have skipper level experience.

I would budget for 4 weeks away from your commitments if you have anything pressing to get back to.

If you are the primary competent person onboard then for sure 5K is a perfectly reasonable ask.

To do that trip in minimum time you wont be doing a lot of sailing. Working out the fuelling stops is the challenge, especially on the leg from Gib to Sicily. Launching in the SoF is what Jeanneau (used to) do with boats destined for the Eastern Med.

I helped deliver a Oceanis 50 from Thessaloniki to Mykonos last year. The owner wanted to motor all the way and we averaged 8 knots. So it’s a fast boat. Compared to mine at least.

Well he thinks I’m a competent person! His idea was to stop in Gibraltar for the first oil change and engine maintenance at Yanmar.

That is fast but presumably flat water and no requirement to conserve fuel as a short hop.

Yes, flat water and no worry about fuel. 40 hours in a straight line. Compared to sailing on my boat the sea felt a bit like a motorway. He put the sails to help sometimes though, but never cut the engine.

Boat delivery is probably the least enjoyable of the sailing formats. Normally the engine is on 24/7 and the pressure is alway on to get the job done as quickly as possible. Very little time or energy to enjoy the trip or to enjoy port stops .Often being out in weather you would choose not to.

No amount of money would tempt me to do it.

That’s what I thought doing the delivery last year. This one should take place in summer so I don’t worry so much about the weather. Winter would be different. Still nice to be on the sea and if I can get 5000 I can buy a Windpilot for my own boat which would be a serious upgrade from the Raymarine wheelpilot.

I used to enjoy deliveries, even when 2 up & it sounds like a good trip - BUT please do make sure that there is no uncertainty about who is the skipper and if that person is the owner that he is competent to plan and execute such a trip. If you are the skip then obviously you'll be making sure you have all the required information to plan the trip effectively. Fuel consumption at various speeds and sea states, water and fuel capacity, provisioning, planned stops and POR's, entry requirements and procedures for the same, contingency, charts and pilots guides, repairs and spares etc etc..

Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs. I'm sure it's not necessary :)(y)
