boat delivery

I read that you could actually sail a boat of this size through the french canal system all the way to Marseilles. Granted it would take you a few weeks.

Is this possible? Has anyone done it before?

Hi Revo and all!

I'm a delivery skipper and although most of my work at this time of year takes me abroad, I have just taken a boat down to Marbella that was only a 35ft Princess.

There are a few key areas to think about, firstly will the boat make it accross the bay of biscay, both in terms of seaworthyness/weather predictions and range (this is important as it adds about 500 extra miles). The basic rule of thumb is that if not, trailer it down!

If it will it can be cheaper to have it delivered, but there are so many factors that it is hard to be definative.

We charge by the mile and round it up to a day rate, customers are happier with this, to this you must add fuel berthings, expenses and flights for the crew.

In addition you must carry out mods required by your insurers.

As a delivery skipper I get frustrated by people who think that we charge too much, after travel time my annual salry isn't much above the average and for that I'm spending a lot of time away from my kids!

Overall, people have their boats delivered for two reasons, either they can't do it themselves or they don't have time. The problem with trailering a boat, is that you have to pay for lots on top of the transport, so remember to get a fixed quote and you have to be their at both ends to sign the paperwork.

My advice is to wait another 6 months in Southampton and then take a week off work, hire a skipper and cruise down, that way you can learn something on the way!

Oh a price for this job, close to 4k, but most of that is fuel and expenses!

Yes subsea this is poss, but it would take a month of Sundays and wouldn't be a good option if you were hiring someone to do it!

I used Coast to Coast in S'oton to bring my boat from the SOF to the UK. Very proffesssional and sensibly priced, so much so, I pass all the enquiries I receive for the larger stuff to them.

used Global to bring our 43' Flybridge from Cadiz to Hamble last year. They handled everything as we weren't able to be at both ends for packing up etc. The cost from memory was about £4500 + VAT +liftout and prep in Spain + storing in Hamble Point for couple of weeks whilst we recommisioned the boat. I guess it was finally over £6000 in total which included an MDL Outlook discount. This was still much cheaper than Peters & May and another company locally. At the time (May 2006) we had too wait for a backload to get this rate. The price you've got of £4K seems pretty good but I doubt if it will end up as being that figure.

Yes I know this boat does not have the capicity to go accross the bay, without carrying an additional fuel load and all the inherant problems of doing that. The main issue is this, to get it trucked or put on a transporter will cost at least 5k.

If you have it skippered down it will probably cost 4k, however there is easily 2k worth of fuel in that.

The problem of trucking it from what I hear speaking to owners is that the true cost esculates with lifting, preparing, dropping etc and a 4k quote can easily become 6k.

The biggest issue with skippering a boat at this time of year is weather, any delay can easily mount up.

Its always a marginal thing and will probably come down to your preferred choice, whilst not wishing to be rude in any way most of my clients don't even question the cost, it is more about the quality of service.

If cost is the issue, I refer to my earlier answer, wait 6 months and get it skippered!

Thanks Tigerfish I have sent you a PM, and thanks to everyone else. My frustration as been eased somewhat by your comments.

My problem mainly stems from the fact that I bought the boat and didn't realise that the mooring was up this year. I can't re-rent, and I need the boat in portugal anyway, mooring already in place.

Transport companies are giving me the run around regarding dates etc, it seems to be 'we'll give you a call when we have space'.

So having it skippered seemed a good alternative, I know that the cost burden is on fuel, because of the lack of decent range and that weather will play a part, however this may be my only reasonable option.

I do have to ask though, why people who advertise their services never ever call back! Or return emails!!!!!

Rant over, thanks to those who have posted /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

That depends on what you've asked them to quote for. I've had 2 boats trucked, one from the Med to UK by Peters & May and the other from Holland to the Med by Van der Wettering. In both cases, we agreed what was going to be included. In the case of Van der Wettering, I agreed a total price to include lift out, dismantle flybridge and sterngear, relaunch and put it all back together again.
What you do have to watch with truck freight is insurance. If a truck company quote includes insurance, they mean CMR insurance which is based on a specific value per ton of goods and is often much less than the value of your boat. So it is essential that you inform your boat insurance co about the truck movement and pay any extra premium, if any
