Good morning. We’re buying a 55ft Cat C barge which is moored on the Aire and Calder. I’ve been looking at road moves to Bristol but it’s very expensive. I’m wondering if I got the boat to goole or Liverpool whether I could hire a skipper to take it round. Any idea on costs or things to watch out for. I’m coastal skipper and wife dayskipper theory so we’d crew and seek to learn. Any thoughts ??? Grateful for your wisdom on this.

Welcome. This is very specialised and to be honest I think you would have difficulty in finding a skipper who would take on that sort of challenge. Either way from Goole or Liverpool you would be going through some of the most exposed and challenging waters around our islands for which your boat is not suitable except in the most benign weather. If you really want to relocate it, bite the bullet and pay the road charges. I expect it will be cheaper anyway, never mind avoiding wear and tear plus arriving where you want it in a couple of days rather than weeks or even months.

Tranona, thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I’ve been making some other enquiries and as you say I think I’ll have to bite the bullet wth road transport. The cost differential doesn't look like being much and it’s a lot less worry and stress.

I’ve an acquaintance who has recently had a barge moved from the Channel Islands to Kent using a towage contractor. It might be an option worth considering, a 55ft boat via road is a significant operation.

There are specialist barge skippers for hire. My friend employed one to cross the North Sea. Try contacting the Dutch Barge Association.

Tranona is dead right about benign conditions but could be possible in a prolonged high pressure system.

PM Kawasaki on here, he spent years doing boat deliveries. Nice guy, lives in North Wales. He may not be up for it but would be good for advice and may know of someone.

Are you seriously considering a winter delivery around the UK coast on a cat C barge ?
This could take months and cost a small fortune if a professional skipper is hired.
Also significant wear and tear both on the vessel and the crew.
Road transport is the only sensible answer.

Had a friend who moved a 60ft Dutch Barge from Brstsol to the Thames, then later to Edinburgh being towed by a tug while on board back in the 90s. If I remember correctly he described it as hell - but it cane be done.

Finally was moved to Bowling on the Clyde under its own power a few years later

For what it's worth we moved our 40ft motor cruiser from Goole to Plymouth by road, it cost £2100 + lifts, which though not inconsiderable I thought reasonable

Kawasaki will do it for nothing , he did it for me just beer and food , which will be double the road price.
My rates have changed since then Stokei
Advice from my Accountant
Now
1 Pint per 10 nautical miles
2 breakfast sarnies per 40 nautical miles
@ 10 kts cruising by the way
Max mileage per 24 hours 100 for obvious reasons
In my experience said barge will be lucky to average 5 kts
Hmm
Interesting!?
