My Maxum i am due to pich up shortly has faded MAXUM decals, i cant find any new ones online so thought over the winter i could respray/laquer the old ones. As i dont have the boat with me at the moment does anyone know if boat decals are just stuck on the same as cars? 3M tape?

It will also need new black and gold pinstripes which im pretty sure i should be able to find as a set instead of trying to line them up myself. being into detailing i am a bit of a fuss pot when it comes to detail, but its time well spent as it helps keep the value of the boat:D

When I renamed my boat, the decals made of vinyl split and tore as I removed them. I warmed them first with a rag soaked in hot water which made the job a lot easier but still not enough to avoid damaging them. Not a problem for me as I also had new vinyl names.

The new vinyl decals were supplied sandwiched between two protective sheets. The first sheet was removed to reveal the clean (not sticky) underside of the vinyl that could be placed against the boat hull when either wet or dry. Then the top strip was removed to reveal the new name. This slowly bonded to the hull over time.

There are companies who will make up new ones - I found one who would make some for my Targa but unfortunately I can't recall what they were called. Might be worth trying Google

name removal

Dont know what adhesive was use on mine but letters came off with a bit of heat but the glue did not which remained sticky, dust stuck to it so still old name 8inch letters !. Tried heat, white spirits, tiny bit of petrol:eek:!With great care !Scrubbed it soap cillit bang mister muscle, all none abrasives ! you name it we tried screamed at them ,, , Tried cellulose thinners glue came off 2 mins !! but had to do on cool day to give me time . on a warm day the stuff evaporated and the glue reset !!

I replaced the entire decal set on my restored Draco this year, (the fan club had someone who made exact replacement sets)
They came with a DVD on how to apply them and a tip I learned was to use spray window cleaner, the type which evaporates and liberally spray the prepared surface and lay the new decals on about 3 ft at a time. I would never have thought you could apply sticky type vinyl to a wet surface but it works a treat as it allows you to remove then as many times as you want until you are happy with the postion, then you go over then with a rubber squeegee to press out air bubbles and excess fluid, wait about 20- 30 mins and then remove the backing paper to reveal the new letters and they adhere to the boat.

Yup, that's the way to apply them. Mildly soapy water does the trick too.

Hmm, just re read my post and did not make it very clear, just gave some hints that the decals in question are plastic letters that were in gold, hence the respray, re laquer, and re stick with new 3M tape, so not vinyl stickers.

All my cars and trucks have been debadged, hot air to remove them and tardis to remove any residue, i have pure aclohol mixed with distilled water to clean the area to re stick:D I always keep a good supply of that as its perfect for cleaning the surface of boat or truck after machining to clean the polish residue off to inspect what percentage of paint/gelcoat correction has been achieved:)

it will probably be easier to respray than try to find and then buy new, not as if there is any rush:(
