Today it was announced that six centres of boat destruction were being created in France to scrap old boats which are encumbering the ports. (They don't say whether this will be compulsory if you don't take your boat out often enough...!!)

They estimate that some 250 000 boats are concerned and the centre will be financed by a tax on new boats.

If this frees up moorings in marinas then maybe mooring charges will come down...I wish.

hm, well, i think they should smash and compress the knackered boats with soem gravel and cement to make large dense blocks of sort of inert mushed-boat concrete blocks, and sink these somewhere between majorca, corsica and Nice, where it is about 2km deep, eventually making a nice new island where instead of having to buy chandlery you could go digging for it.

Its a pity but a lot of those boats are left as the charges mount up. Ive seen good boats impounded for non payment in Cogolin, in one case i asked if i could have a wooden one and even offerd to pay the charges, the capitaniere chose to sink it. thats forbidden now.
Also i onece left my anchor chain in the antifouling area in St Tropez. next day after breakfast i went to finish marking it only to find it had gone!! The capitanierie had cleaned up, and sunk it!!!
Where are these centers,i wouldent mind recycling a boat or anchor winch---

Once again the French are lagging behind us we have had a centre of boat destruction for years,It's located just off the Needles. It's so popular that they hold an open day once a year(To coincide with the Round the Island Race)so that the general Public can watch boats being destroyed.

Brilliant idea of the French. Perhaps we should put our plastic boats out on the kerbside along with the milk bottles for recycling?

We do it British style. Just like the fridges and matresses dumped in the hedgerows, and the cars torched on country lanes, you will no doubt start to find old GRP boats dumped by the side of creeks all over the country.

A more serious implication in this rep[ort is that boats depreciate eventually falling to zero. Now this is something we definitely havent been used to here.
