Thanks Piers, Halfrauds say that Maquires NXT All Metal Polish is OK for chrome too.

I'm always suspicious of what might be said by a reseller. It all depends on the abrasive in Maquires. For chrome, I use the Brasso impregnated cloth. Takes longer to clean (maybe because there's no abrasive in it) but the results are excellent.

OK, understood. Its for the radar arch / christmas tree thing so probably OK to use Maquires. For more precious internal joinery / chromes I see what you mean.

Thanks for all the tip so far. I must confess that Stardrops has become my cleaner of choice for all sort of things. As said earlier, seems to be quite gentle and doesn't seem to have turned my gelcoat orange or anything like that. Under £1 a bottle two.

Anyhow, the metalwork on the boat is the next bit to receive some attention. Anyone got any recommendations (I see Flitz mentioned above)?

I use Flitz, as it was recommended by my brother in law who worked on superyachts. If it was good enough for the Mayan Queen, then I was happy to use it on my little Mobo! It's an American product so harder to get hold of, but you can get it from a few sites online.

You can also buy a buffing attachment for a normal electric drill which works wonders with it.

I find Flitz completely gets rid of any surface rust, and really polishes the chrome and stainless. I did my Bimini Frame earlier in the season and it is still shining and protected!

I highly recommend.

I washed my boat recently but the normal boat wash and wax I use (can't remember the brand but it is a boaty one) didn't remove the black streak marks. I've used the Starbright black streak remover before but can anyone recommend an alternative product?

The August Race stuff looks really nice but not cheap. One for the boat show perhaps!

I've just ordered the vinyl cleaner - I'll let you all know how I get on with it.

Acetone, or Oxalyic acid. Simples.

Elbow grease should be good for that , as well as black streaks

Bilgex works brilliantly for me. Gets out the grime, leaves it looking shiny

I use something like Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner. Cuts through the grease.

+1 for Bilgex; you can even get one that leaves a nice smell. I put a gallon of (diluted) warm bilgex into the bilge, then went for a short drive to agitate. Used a oil sump pump to remove - easy as whilst tall my arms aren't 4ft either. Recommend using a cheap nappy and some old bbq tongs to get the last dregs/wipe clean; Think I got 20 from Tesco for under £2.

The vital element when cleaning gelcoat is not to use anything which has an abrasive in it. Take care, since most cream cleaners are abrasives.

When cleaning bilges, I use Wurth Brake Cleaner to remove grease and oil deposits (it's brilliant), and MuckOff for general cleaning thereafter - http://www.playdeau.com/whats-in-play-deau-make-up-bag/

Also, we have a lady that comes and cleans the boat on demand but I do enjoy killing an hour giving the topsides a bit of a polish. Can anyone recommend a spray that I can use on a dry / clean boat to give it more of a shine (there's wax on there already)?

Will need to check next time I’m on board. Good stuff recommended by Ade who fitted the carpets. At home we use Vanish.
