Two adults and 4 kids....... I would consider a cat if some have never sailed before.
Croatia and Greece both have pros and cons. The Ionian is busier and harder to find places to moor, anchor or marina in the summer. But cheaper. Wind is more fickle. Generally too light to sail in the mornings and then can be overpowering (frightening for the inexperienced) in the afternoons
Croatia has many more options for anchoring, mooring and marina but does cost more.
Having sailed both areas I would suggest hiring a cat starting at Split. Loads of possible destinations.
