I am considering laying Eildon Charcoal Flat Marine Carpet. Buying it from Bunnings (our hardware chain) it is about half the price of marine carpet from the boat chandlers.

Are there any words of warning?

Description

  • UV stabilised, durable, insulates and anti-static
  • Pool and sea water comparable, quick drying and will not rot
  • Resists mild chemicals and fuels, simply clean with detergent and fresh water
  • Flexible and easy to work with, can be moulded up and over fixtures
  • DIY fibre lock carpet, won't fray when cut and shaped
Eildon Flat Surface 2m Wide (+/-1%) Marine Carpet is suitable to enhance or renew outdoor and indoor deck areas. Easy to hold fast with synthetic turf adhesive and aluminium trim bars.
Ideally used for floors, seats, decks and trim in boats, vans and annexes, on decks, pool and spa surrounds, the smooth flat surface is easy to hose clean and maintain making it the perfect choice for any home.

Don’t know about that particular carpet

But make sure the crew know to leave their shoes and boots outside. And go barefoot or indoor only shoes.

Also probably worth getting the waterproof treatment - like the old spill guard type of thing.

We also used to use that plastic matting - the type in offices - in high traffic areas where people might forget the shoes.

Wouldn't plastic matting get slippery - particularly if wet?

In high traffic areas (bottom of the gangway ladder?) I could use something else. There's not a lot of carpet in the (43ft) yacht so I'm not too worried if I had to re-lay carpet every so often.

Leaving shoes outside would seem to make sense. Thanks.

The stuff we used was textured and had those sharp pointy bits on the underside to keep them in place.

Like this but we used to buy It in rolls.

Flotex has proven over the last ten years aboard to be first class. It's stain resistant, pressure washable and incredibly durable.

Thanks for that.
Flotex Flocked Flooring
Flotex is the only product available in the flooring market that combines the appeal of a textile floor covering with the practical and hygienic advantages of a resilient. Flotex is available in a wide range of colours & commercially viable designs, all whilst being able to withstand extreme wear & high traffic - perfect for very busy locations in leisure, education, office & retail environments. Flotex flocked flooring products are available in sheet, tile and plank formats

We have some bits of 'exterior carpet' cut to fit the cockpit floor and bridge deck.
Traps a lot of dirt in harbour.
rolled up and in the locker underway in anything more than F2.

I used carpet squares from The Range. Cheap, easy to fit and a stain usually only means one square to replace. They recently got evicted after 15 years heavy use because they were too grubby for Milady to tolerate any longer. TBF, she wasn't wrong.

Pro tip - buy a few extras. The cheap places may not have the one you want when you need it

We've had this sort of stuff down for the last 15 years. Outdoor carpet
It's starting to look a little bit stained and worn so, thanks to this thread, I think I will order some more. A different colour maybe!
It's got the 'nibs' on the back that stop it moving. Anything spilled on it goes straight through, similarly any water underneath it just evaporates away, unlike carpet with a backing that can trap water and condensation. It's even quite nice on bare feet. We occasionally take it out and give it a powerwashing.

I suspect the stuff Coopec is looking at is like what you get in ski-boats, to be comfortable on waterskiers' bare feet. It's kind of like a cross between astroturf and car boot lining, and it's already completely waterproof.

It's not really to my taste on a yacht - I'm quite happy with our mixture of textured GRP, teak, and non-slip wood-effect laminate - but I don't see any particular problems with using it.

This was inside the accommodation, bridge and survey shack.

I just remember being bullied into something similar on a 3 piece suite. I complained about the cost but was grateful for it many times!

I visited the Bunnings Hardware chain today and looked at all sorts of boat carpet - thick/thin carpet pile, tiles, plain/patterned...... I've noted your comments re tiles, buying extra (important) etc.

Now what about colour? I suppose a light colour will brighten the interior...... maybe?

We replaced our boat carpet with rubber-backed bathroom carpet from a local shop. This has proved totally satisfactory, and is better than the HR original, being more rigid and staying in place without studs.

Thanks John

That's another I will look at

Outdoor Carpets
Protect your floor surfaces from the punishing Australian weather with outdoor and marine carpets. Made from synthetic fibres that are engineered to repel water and stains, they’re quick drying and the ideal choice for the decks and interiors of small boats, outdoor decking areas, garages and commercial floor spaces. They’re also non-slip, UV stabilised, highly durable, and hold up extremely well under harsh elements like saltwater, wind, rain and sun.

I just have a few house rugs scattered around down below that can be taken up if the passage is rough and for brushing over the side.

If they get too tatty we just donate then to the skip and buy new.

No carpets in the cockpit or deck

In inclement weather we have an IKEA bag at the bottom of the companionway that you take off all your wet stuff into, then step into a dry pair of slippers.

Once fabrics get wet with seawater they never seem to dry properly

Flotex is available in some vaguely convincing planked effects. I've used it to cover a laminate kitchen floor, so making it safe for an ageing Mum, and the offcuts are in use all over the place as 'ironic' door mats and a car boot liner for the dog. I'd certainly use it on a boat.

I question why you have chosen a specialist carpet. I have used medium pile wool and synthetic carpet for 20 years with very good results. No rotting or other drawbacks. A good vacuum helps keep it clean and sweet. After 5-7 years partial wear demands replacement which is easy to source, and gives the 1st mate a chance to exercise some judgement in colour. Using the old as template for the new makes refitting easy. Double sided tape in way of wear areas keeps it stable, and non slip matting works well too.
