Boat capsizes on Thames....

I guess the words "hired" could either mean borrowed from a friend or could be a mis-understanding of the comments from "Chas Newens" employee (Julie) in the Daily Mail version of the article which seems to talk about hiring out boats to couples for marriage proposals etc.

You mean the Daily Mail didn't get it quite right? !!!

Exactly. I hate to mention the name 'Darwin' as the usual haters will deride me for it, but I just don't know what else to say. It's so utterly avoidable in the most basic sense :-(

I've just spent a weekend in Amsterdam. I saw an awful lot of people on small boats there, day and night, but not a single lifejacket. Mind you, I didn't see a single cycle helmet either.

Humm, is there any information on the cause of the accident, colliding with unlight bouy or mooring warps, doing tight turns at speed, passing vessel wash, or even drinking before hand and suffering from the effects of cold water, just hope that the relatives get some solice in any investigations.
A very sad affair all round.
Used to sometimes patrol these waters during darkness and require full attention and awareness of dangers and other craft, oh and of course drift wood and rubbish. But that part of the Thames can be quite magical at night with the effects of lighting and water combined with sounds, so I can understand the attraction to getting afloat to enjoy it.
