Boat broken into and 3 others also in the same Creek

Trevor Cock lives there and he has a security camera following a theft from his house
That could be a good line of enquiry. There must have been limited entry points and there could well be houses with cctv along the routes to those entry points.

It doesn't sound like a random theft as TG has mentioned. Doesn't that mean the thief is possibly local, probably a boat user and also knows where to sell a 500hp outboard. I would think that for a theft this was a fairly high risk operation so they probably expect to make a fair bit from it.

Well as a bit of Fred Drift ere; long time ago there was a series, same night, of break ins to Boats on the Medway, they used a dingy to place all or most of the 'stuff' but overloaded it when they were making off to the parked up Van; result that the dinghy overturned depositing 'stuff' along the muddy river bed which became exposed at low tide; resulting in the Fellas swimming as best they could and someone calling the Rescue Services to help them; well rescued they were and taken to Hospital for check ups ; they gave false names and addresses etc and made off before morning light rose up; so the Land Police were allerted to the many items on the mud flats; so things can go wrong even with best plans;

The OP was a Police Officer, i assume he is well able to deduce what actions are available to him
Yes thats after the event though ?
Yes quite so so, BUT, did he install any anti theft Alarms or Detection Systems or even CCTV to offer some degree of protection or aid to identifying said Crims ? Loud Alarms, identification coloured spray, loud speakers, etc etc; maybe he did maybe he did not ?

Bit of a forum lurker but wanted to echo others sentiment of rotten luck and what scum etc. You always seem to find time to come back with a passage plan for those that need it which I’ve always thought was very decent of you. I have some ideas on searches etc but would keep them off a public forum and will dm you.
As an aside I had my scooter stolen a couple of years back, really upset me at the time I have to say but I’m over it. The thing is it was never seen again, not a trace or a mention, completely vanished.

I've rigged up a system whereby if the hatch is opened in the normal manner, a harpoon gun behind it goes off ...
Yea well; in the current Virus Climate Hoo Hah supprised that you have not attracted them that cry out, Save the NHS' then, as that Harpoon Gun will certainy do some damage so take up NHS time and energy {:-)#

Yup, definitely a job for the mortician.

I remember reading a story, I'm pretty sure it was in Kent, of a motorcyclist who got sick of having his garage broken into/motorcycles being stolen, and so rigged up not a shotgun, but a shotgun cartridge to go off on a trip wire. The outcome being some tealeaf lost part of his intestine.

Don't know if you could still get away with it today, but at the time he did.

The confined space of a boat really lends itself to booby traps.

I just never imagined that rigging up kitchen towels might be one.

Grove Road. We shouldn't discuss the second question.

But the road on and off the island is covered by CCTV.
So a few hours of analysing vehicle movements.. First identify all the normal commmuter traffic and vehicles registered to the island. Then looking for a strange vehicle arriving in the small hours .. It will almost certainly be a van

You have obviously not seen the CCTV coverage, vehicles are just a little dot in the distance ...... and you are assuming that the van left the island

I was thinking of the ANPR cameras that monitor most junctions in and out of most towns. They cover all roads into Witham Burnham and Maldon. There are cameras around Colchester so I would not expect to be able to get onto Mersea without being recorded.

maybe he didnt know about such aids .

Thanks cherod. That's not very nice. Tomahawk, you can be sure that David and I will be delighted to know that you can't get onto the Island without being recorded. :)

No I didn't have an alarm. Frankly I never thought of it. The boat is run down, ugly, ill kempt in appearance. Given that I am surrounding by 80 attractive boats I didn't pay any attention to the issue. Do I have any detection systems? I ain't saying.
