Boat Battery - Good Price

The claim of 500 discharge cycles is impressive: up there with a 12V Trojan, but at around 60% of the price (which encourages the wallet but gives pause about quality). On the other hand few manufacturers publish cycle expectations, and on the face of it the 4-year warranty sounds good. Be interested to hear how they get on.

Deep Cycle - Yes ???

With a CCA of 900 or 1000, they can't possibly be designed for deep cycle, so this is a false claim.

Seems to be a common claim, these days. A lot of batteries claim to have dual purpose. We'll be putting the batteries through their paces once we head off next month so it'll be interesting to see how they cope.

Here's a conversation I had on Monday this week with one of the big battery sellers (not Alpha) often recommended on the forum:

Me - "I'm looking for two leisure type batteries around 80Ah. You've got 4 different makes and two grades within each make. They range from about £60 to £90 and all seem to be identical apart from the names and the warranty. Is there really any difference?"

Him - "No not really, just pick whichever you fancy."

Me - "You're not going to try and persuade me the dearer ones are better then?"

Him - "No there's nothing in it really."

The only one where I've been able to track down the actual manufacturer is the Alphaline sold by Battery Megastore (not by Alpha Batteries). They are made by ATLASBX in Korea http://www.atlasbx.co.kr/jsp/english/intro/intro_4.jsp (They confirm Batt Mega is their UK distributor http://www.alphalinebatteries.co.uk/)

The other ones I was looking at (and the 88Ah Xplorer, come to that) could easily have come off the same production line, they are indistinguishable.

In the end I bought Exide, which are a bit different, but I don't know where they are made. None of the Exide information tells you and there's nothing on the battery that gives it away. (I'm surprised they don't have to be marked with country of origin.)

Years ago the company I worked for made batteries for Unipart. There were two ranges at different prices with different warranties. The only technical difference was the colour of the box, the insides were the same. Nothing changes!

Believe me, nothing in this price range is deep cycle. "Leisure" may just last a bit better than a truck battery. Or not.

The Bat MegaStore DC31 didn't quote a CCA (said n/a) and having a wind gen, I don't deep cycle my batteries.
I seem to get good life out of my batteries, (I have 5) the earliest failure was after six years.
I don't use a dedicated starter battery, I use the other bank to the one I happen to be using (1x120 or 2x75).
