Heat sensors are best otherwise you will get false alarms with a motion sensor if the boat is kept on the water. IMHO alarms with flashing lights and sirens go unheeded especially if the boat is one of dozens in a marina. When was the last time you went to investigate a car with its alarm going, we usually assume its a false alarm or just not my problem. It could be worthwhile checking out Interactive Projects Ltd they have a system which will sound the alarm but even better will send an SMS to your mobile so you have instant warning that you have a problem.
Their mail is pcollins@interactive-projects.co.uk

Having fitted loads of alarms to m/cycles & been less than impressed.....don't use just the standard alarm siren : rig it up (via a relay if requ'd) to the boat's horn (assuming that's stupidly loud) & for inside buy something very, very loud- the little piezo-electric ones usually supplied are a waste of time.

Maplin,RS components & others sell 12V & 240V sounders, I'd look for 120db+ @1m nothing too tinny/small....you can buy nice bright strobe-lamps too, that would suitably upset any midnight thieves (one inside, one out?)...& what about a smoke machine??? (I'm being silly now,I think?)

Pressure pads+ door switches & a timer/relays to switch the thing off after a sensible delay can make it a cheapish make-it yourself project, w/o much risk of false alarms & imo at least as effective as the commercially available stuff.

SMS alerts are OK if the boat's at the end of your drive, or you know that the police/marina response time is very short indeed.

I have installed a fair number of alarms [not in boats] and think, from your question, that there may be a slight confusion. The most widely used motion sensor is a passive infra-red [pir] which works by sensing moving heat, i.e. it detects the variation of the body heat of an intruder against the background temperature.Provided that there are no heat sources in the area to be protected & that sunlight & bright lights cannot be shone onto the sensor then it will probably do a good job & also be of some use in detecting a fire!
Good luck.
