I'm about to order the Yacht Sentinel YS6 boat alarm,
with a number of sensors, (bilges, doors, motion, shore power, ...)

would you place a siren on the boat or only have alarm on several I-phones ?
(local gardiennage, swmbo, myself...)

so far I never had a siren, I'm afraid that this could annoy the locals in case of alarm, and nobody knows what is going on nor can do something about it ...

or am I missing something ?

A good friend of mine that is in the domotic business and inevitably installs siren boxes on houses, he told me that thieves when entering such a property first thing they do is rip it off the wall and if there's a swimming pool in the house throw it in to silence it... Alternative is expanding foam sprayed in to silence the spinning thing of the siren, but water is easier, faster and cheaper...

Bearing in mind that on a boat you CANNOT really install the siren in an inacessible spot, and bearing in mind all the acres of water around it, I'd say don't bother, SMS and/or email to various accnts. I was on SMS, now about to switch to emailing :D
I have installed one as part of the domotic system, haven't bothered with the alarm, but I'm toying with the idea of wiring it up to the two 100mm wide PROPER alarm bells that were originally wired to engine alarms for the Detroit diesels on MiToS. They are well hidden, and will definitely annoy them if they enter, not exceptionally loud though.

cheers
